Old Cheap Landrover Wanted

A mate of mine is after an old landrover for taking the dog out for a walk (well, getting the dog to the walkig destination that is....)

Not bothered on particualr model in particluar as long as it has a back door to get the dog in/out of!

Fed up of getting is A4 Estate (Sorry Mark, Avant!) dirty.

He's looking to pay only a few hundred for it, with MOT.

Anyone know of any around & what he's likely to realistically pay for one in roadworthy condition. Of course doesn't need to be clean, just driveable with an MOT.

cheers

Ian

take a look at ebay....

Defenders trend to hold their value, but you can get FFRR and D2s quite cheap.

A friend of mine paid 1500 for a FFRR 4.6V8. another 1K for tyres and suspension lift and is running it well.

A bit of rust but nothing that made it fail the MOT.

Sorry pressed submit instead of preview.

for a few hundred quid he wont get much. Even old series are selling for high prices. Unless he buys a reck. as long as the chassis and bulkhead are OK (Defender 90) then all the other bits can be easily replaced.

post over on www.landrovernet.com - these guys tend to have more exposure to vehicles of the type you're talking about

You will pick up a reasonable Series 3 for about £750. Don't expect much though. That should get you one with 12 months mot and a solid chassis. Expect rust around the edges for that money, and expect a bit of mechanical work required.

If you can find one that has been rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis, that would be a bonus, but would be more than £750.

Very important with all Series Land Rovers, check the bulkhead with a magnet. Bodged bulkhead = unsafe vehicle, and there are plenty around.

Don't worry too much about smokey/noisy engines, or tired gearbox/axles/springs etc, its just meccano on a big scale. Obviously adjust price to suit, but don't pass over a good solid chassis and bulkhead because it smokes, clonks and whines a bit Wink

Careful with ebay, check the vehicle history very carefully. Lots of old series vehicles get nicked and are easy fodder to amateur ringers. The problem is they are so meccano like, you can mix the bits up and its then hard to tell.

Not many people know this, but the correct place to get the chassis number is on the front right hand outside edge of the chassis, just in front of the forward mounting for the front right spring. If its an original chassis, it will be there, you may have to scrape to see it. It should match the plate screwed to the interior of the bulkhead with the 4x4 info on.

If it does not match the plate and the reg doc, walk away. If it does not have one, its a replacement chassis.

If it has neither a number on the chassis and a missing plate, then its going to be difficult to prove either way, and should be on a Q plate.
