Tailgate load bearing platform and mobility scooter hoist
Perhaps other members may be interested in how I fitted a flat load-bearing platform on the dropdown tailgate of my D3 HSE. My requirement for such a device was to mount a hoist for my wife’s mobility scooter. Unable to find a suitable substantial flat area I decided to remove the Harman Kardon bass speaker, something I decided I could do without,
The first job was to cut a plywood template to fir the hole left by removing the speaker, then have a 5mm thick steel plate laser cut to shape: -
The matching speaker fixing holes were drilled in the plate together with the fixing holes for the hoist base column. The speaker socket head mounting screws were reused to secure the plate: -
I had previously bought off eBay two hoists that I thought would do the job. I settled on an Autochair 80kg hoist, which had the advantage of a lever operated folding jib: -
To stop the tailgate tipping up when the weight of the scooter was swung into the car I fabricated a removable cranked steel brace, which slotted between the hoist base frame and the tailgate locking pin.
The final assembly was as follows: -
The tailgate card was cut to fit around the hoist column (a replacement, should I decide to sell the D3 in the future, was purchased from Duckworths at a cost of £60)
The 12 volt power for the hoist was, for simplicity, taken from the rear power socket. The hoist junction box and hand controller were also positioned close to the 12-volt socket:
When closing the tailgate the hoist is swung sideways to clear the roof lining for easy storage: -
To hold the folded hoist secure in transit a rubber bungee is looped round the roof grab handle, there is very little strain on the handle.
If any one wants further information or photographs please let me know.
Hope someone finds the installation interesting. The steel plate I used would make a good anchor point for other heavy equipment that needs to be secured to the tailgate. Keith

Looks a very natty bit of kit. I assume the loaded wieght of the scooter at its furthest point away from the car (lever effect) is less than the tailgate load limit?

The weight of the scooter is 50Kg.
I understood that the tailgate could take the weight of 3 adults, therefore a 50Kg scooter at 18" overhang should be well inside the tailgate capability.
Thanks for all your comments. 8)
For information the price of the laser cut steel plate was £25 but I had to drill the 12 x 8mm fixing holes otherwise the cost nearly doubled. Keith

A tidy job. I've seen what happens in a crash when one of these mobility scooters joins the driver in the front; does it get strapped to the rear load points?

The scooter certainly does get strapped down in the rear load bay with a ratchet web strap.
Would not travel without doing so. Take a close look at the third image, you can just make out an orange strap Keith
