3.0 litre engine reliability |
|
I am looking at buying a 3.0l but it would probably be without a warranty
Are there any statistics that explain the extent of the turbo oil seal problems?
The v8 never missed a beat but I am a little nervous about the 3.0l
Has this new blanking fix cured the whole issue? Does anyone know if this is still an issue for the 2011/12 models
Thanks
Ian

Ian when I had my first D4 I had lots of smoke issues, there were tow of us on here who were the first to report such issues, both ended up having new engines which cured the issue. Both had loads of mods done prior to the new engine, turbos, EGR valves, various pipes, various hoses, one way valves and blanking plates. None of which cured the issue totally, all made a diffrence but none cured the issue totally.
Having said all of that though, in all the time I had the car with the issues (2 years) it never let me down or gave the christmas tree dash light display. The car was faultless apart from the cloud of smoke. Oil consumption was very hit and miss, would use no oil for few months and then a lot very quickly before none again.

The dealer can clean all the associated pipes for the turbo out and make the problem go away for about 2000 miles, had that happen a couple of time.
The blancking kit that was fitted to mine was about 16 months ago and it initailly cured the problem. I could no longer see clouds of smoke when accelerating. However after about 1000 miles I could see smoke via the rear camera, just a small puff every now and again. This got gradually worse until I could see it via the mirrors. It however did not get as bad as before the blank was fitted.
Having said all of that, the car still made me every time I drove it as long as I did not look in the mirrors. The dealership was brilliant throughout, LR customer services were very very supportive, LR technical were supportive but a little slow to respond to the dealers.
Would I buy another, yes I have and would/will look to buy another one in the future, would it put me off buying one, definatley not.
If I had brought a car that was a few years old and done a lot of miles, i would not have pushed so hard to get it fixed, however I was fortunate enough to buy new with full warranty and as a result I wanted a car that was perfect.
At the end of the day it is a fantastic car that does exactly what it claims to do with or without the smoke MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Thanks Micky and Russell
I am tempted to take the plunge and will consider a warranty direct warranty after a year or two
Is it know to affect all cars or still just a small %?
Best regards, Ian

Never seen smoke from my MY11 car... and I've been watching closely after reading about issues.

ive had a couple of 3.0TDV6 / SDV6 cars since 2010 and the engine has been great and no problems - in fact no problems with anything...
my only gripe is the EPB lever is now silver and keeps reflecting the sun up into my eyes Duncan

Glad to hear. I drove one last summer and have to say I wanted to hate it as I loved my v8 so much. But I couldn't hate it. It refused to drink as much fuel as I wanted and be slow and even the noise in the cabin wasn't loud enough for me to gloat how much better my v8 was
Think I have some black duct tape for the epb I could send you
