Thinking about a New Discovery - A Few Questions |

Hello All,
I'm joining the forum as a possible new Discovery owner.
I'm currently on my second TD6 Range Rover, but fed up of:
- noisy engines
- unreliable suspension
- wallowy suspension
- clumsy, bulky load cover
- tiny glove box
- noisy roof rack
I've just spoken to a guy who's made the change from RR to Disco3, thinks its great, and it seems to tick most of the boxes at £15,000 less.
Anyway, I got a couple of questions the dealer can't help with.
1. Has anyone looked at fitting a towball to the front of the vehicle, for trailer handling in tricky conditions? I've seen this in action on Defenders and it's very good for close quarters handling. The Range Rover monocoque doesn't allow a suitable fixing.
2. Is the rear A/C option a real benefit? Is it mainly for the 2nd or for the 3rd row of seats benefit?
3. I've seen some comments on the expedition rack in this forum. How easy is it to fit/remove. (The RR is really tricky with its expedition rack, and there's a real danger of scratching the roof). Also, the RR rack howls and roars above about 40mph.
4. Has anyone opted for specifying smaller wheels than 19" on the HSE in interests of comfort and/or rim protection?
5. Whats the current availability of 3rd party accessories? Any particularly good suppliers to look at?

Brace yourself Ron and welcome, but I will start before the other do.
Towball on front, can be done, but not officially. This brings in the warranty angle.
Wheels that is a current subject. The availablity of tyres is the biggest problem in the UK. If I had a choice I would fit 16" wheels with nice soft tyres for off road use, but they cause drag on road. We are getting results on tyres, but it is slow. Do not consider the 17" as tyres are like hens teeth, rare.
Accesories will get better, but the car is less than a year old in the UK and even the USA are finding it hard for a vareity of extras.
The other will fill in the rest. Hope this is a starter.

Ron, I had a TD6 Range Rover for 3 months when they first came out and then sold it back to the dealer cos I hated it. Same issues you had, plus the sense that you were driving something the size of an aircraft carrier really bugged me. The Disco 3 is actually bigger and heavier but it feels like a ballerina compared to he RR barge.
On your other questions :
Front towball on any vehicle would be really dangerous in a head-on collission. It would affect your airbag deployment, compromise crush cans and probably kill anything you hit. There is a very good towing attachment loop on the front of the D3 that might permit some tempoary fitting to allow simple caravan manouvering...
Roof rack, we have the 2 bar roof rack system on the D3 which works pretty well. Only difficulties are the height of the vehicle, the narrowness of the bars width ways and the width of the bars front to back and the ludicrously low recommended maximum load capacity.
18" wheels are just fine on road and off
Standard aircon effective on 2nd row seats, but not great onto third.
Very few third party accessories specifically for D3. Don't imagine we will see too many of those for a couple of years yet. What sort of accessories did you have in mind. Disco 4 TDV6HSE

If it is the same trailer you move, what about a powertouch mover, they cost about £800 and are great, better than potential insurance hikes, warranty issues etc DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
