Black Smoke - Crack to the Intercooler Unit
Hi Peeps,
So recently Bertha (Disco 3) starting throwing out black smoke under hard acceleration and we took it to our trusty garage (not main dealer but Landrover specialists) and they diagnosed a fault on the EGR valve and blanked them - told me to run it for a while and that the smoke should clear after a few journeys - well it did seem to get better and then took the trailer for its annual service on Friday and yep, plume of black smoke - worse than before, so booked it back in and just received the call to say that the Intercooler has two cracks in it and its in pieces until the new intercooler arrives tomorrow - so stuck driving the MIL's Toyota Aygo (an experience that it)
Two questions really, 1.) What causes the unit to crack (Could it be manufactures defect or just wear and tear?? and 2.) garage are charging approx £320.00 for the parts and labor - they assure me that then the problem will be fixed (Fingers and toes crossed..........)
Oh, and a third - will fuel consumption improve after this has been done??

I doubt wear & tear could do it unless you hammered into something... I go off-road and the only damage sustained is to pack it with mud.
I have changed mine on the driveway with normal tools - the new IC from LR cost around £90 all in. Fitting it is relatively easy albeit one bolt is a bit of a PITA but working slowly (with Tea & Pee breaks) took me around 5 hours all in - it was the first time I'd done it.
The reason I changed mine was to allow the original to soak the mud out so I can swap them as needed.
After putting the clean one on I noticed the fan coming on less and a slight improvement in pickup & MPG.I see no ships........

Hi
Verify anyway, the hose that goes from the intercooler, many broken here!
I've still never seen a broken intercooler! Have you seen the cracks? Or rub against something!? ..
Have you noticed a loss of power?
The consomation can only be improved after repairs!Marco.

As Marco says you should also be certain it's not one of the IC hoses - especially the large leftmost one.
These split easily but good replacements are available and take minutes to change.I see no ships........

Leftmost viewed from driver seat or when stood in front looking at the front numberplate.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Thanks guys,
I believe all the pipes/ hoses were checked when they blanked the EGR Valve........... They have actually removed the Intercooler unit and visibly there is two holes/ cracks in the unit
Big Red 999 thanks for the offer, unfortunately I authorised garage to go ahead yesterday and order the part, I need the car back and at the moment it is in bit at the garage waiting for the intercooler to arrive.............
Just on a side note though, if anyone had a suspension compressor for sale - I would be interested in that!!
Hopefully we get to pick up Bertha later on this afternoon - minus the smoke - I don't think the neddy would of appreciated being in the trailer when that was happening!!............Bloody Cars!
