Ipad Installation on Dash of D3

Hi Guys
I just installed my ipad into the D3 all sound comes through the speakers and the ipad charges when the car ignition is turned on all you have to do is select Aux and it mutes when a call comes in or the satnav is in use , not worked out if I can control it from the steering wheel controls yet maybe do that in phase 2
Heres what it looks like as well and it is fully detachable

It is a work in progress so might modify it when the time allows and the bracket I made myself as there is nothing available that leaves a very discreet mounting with no holes needing drilled, I didnt get a chance to take any photos of the bracket yet but it allows the ipad to move up and down.
It wont be to everyones taste but any comments or ideas on improvement would be appreciated
cheers

I have toying with the same idea, and perhaps configured in the way of the pic above. Use a standard iPad sucker and stick it onto the SatNav screen.

It can be removed should I need to use the SatNav screen.

The logic is this:
- depending on the assumption that the iPad can act as a SatNav,
- current and more detailed / updated maps are available on the iPad
- the iPad has a GPS chip and is not dependent on data via Sim card
- User defined data can be added e.g. speed cameras

My SatNav maps are very outdated and newer ones does not differ much. Add to that the price of a new disk, then I might as well buy the iPad and get more functionality. No need for the SatNav screen since my car is std and I only use the SatNav.

I know that is not not an iPad help line, but maybe someone has tried this before ? Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

cheers

If you're IPad is in that position whilst driving, expect a tug from the law as I'm sure it obscures too much of the windscreen. It's one of the favourite pull overs for the Police in Kent as the foreign drivers are using IPads and Laptops in their windscreens for satnavs.

I'm after this too, waiting for RLD to make some balls so to speak.

Just about to say the same, nice job but you can't install them like that in the line of vision. Our company install Panasonic Toughbook's in to vehicles on dash brackets and it is a nightmare trying to comply with the legislation of not covering the hazard switch and not obscuring the line of vision.

Any device that sits in the arc of the wiper sweep in the drivers line of sight is considered an obstruction by VOSA, obviously there is some discretion applied as plenty of Tom Toms are stuck in the middle but a large device like that may attract the boys in blue unfortunately.

iPad

Hi
It actually doesn't obscure the windscreen area if its installed in landscape mode, if you put it in portrait mode then it will
I wanted to still see the oe screen for 4x4 info but if your not bothered by this you can put a lead to the back of the oe sat nav and have that info on the iPad screen .
For now it gives me music , sat nav and off road info but as my vehicle is a demo car for the emergency services we are in the middle of developing a blues and twos system that is controlled by the iPad.
I wouldn't use a sucker system on the glass of the oe sat nav it's just not thick enough to take the weight of the iPad ,especially if you were on a rough road. I think there would be a high possibility of you cracking the screen
I'm looking at redesigning the bracket so it can slide up and down so I can move the iPad from the position it is in the photo to in front of the oe sat nav screen.
It is a work in progress so I will gradually redevelope stuff until I'm happy with it, I don't think plod would be to happy if he caught you watching movies on it if the car was moving.
Cheers

If you are developing it for the emergency services then (and you probably know this already) you may need to consider if it can lock out anything other than satnav and blues controls. Any form of video visible to the driver is a big no-no, even a vehicle mounted camera. Some forces will require the device to interface with the IDR so they can see what was on screen if there's a collision. I'd have thought the same will apply to enlightened commercial uers as they don't want a corporate manslaughter case from a driver playing Angry Birds!

Thanks MikeS2005 for the feedback and warning re the SatNav screen.

Do you use the iPad for SatNav as well ? I read elsewhere that there is an App called co-Pilot, bit buggy though.

If you were to connect the SatNav display to the iPad can you still access the touch screen functions?
