Very high SWR

Been trying my CB today after picking up an SWR meter at LRO, but getting readings up around 5 on all channels no matter what I do with the whip, so assume it's a groundplane/ earth issue.

I have an RLD mount on the roof rail. The mount is coated in black powdercoat, do you think I need to strip it off where the dome mount bolts on in order to get a better connection?

Has anyone else had any problems and how did you solve them?

Cheers Thumbs Up

Also check your cabling to make sure you have end-to-end continuity and no shorts Thumbs Up

Yep it's having the SWR meter on that has lead me to think there is an earth/plane problem as the reading is 5 no matter what I do with the aerial Thumbs Up

Right, I have added a 4mm earth from the aerial dome mount to the battery and it has made quite a difference, combined with uncoiling the coax inside the car. It's still a bit high, but the reading on 40 is lower than the reading on 1, telling me the aerial needs to be longer. Unfortunately it is as long as it will go as when trying to "adjust" the aerial yesterday I lopped around 2 inches off the top Embarassed and obviously I couldn't afford to lose those two inches Laughing

So, new orbiter tomorrow and try again! Mr. Green

Mount moved to back of car, earth put to the point on the tailgate, coax re-routed in the car again and an SWR of 1.4 on Channel 1, 1.5 on 20 and 1.6 on 40 Smile
