Swap Detachable to Fixed Tow Bar |
|
When I ordered my D4 I specified a factory fitted detachable, mostly because I didn't want to knock me shins when pottering about at the back of the car. I forgot about the split tailgate which means your legs are well removed from the tow ball.
I would now like to carry bikes on the tow hitch whilst tugging my caravan and I believe the only way is to get a fixed tow bar. How do these fix to the chassis (do they use the female part of the detachable), and is it a straight forward swap. I assume I won't have to mess about with the electrics. Would you recommend a fixed or adjustable height towbar ?
Also, what bike carrier would you recommend - I would need to easily get to the back of the car when pitching up with the caravan. MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

Hi,
it is the same "female" part, which is always mounted in the cars, for the multiple height tow bar. In Land Rovers owner system Topix you can find the install instructions in the owner section:

Here the instructions link (probably in German):

I have used a 2 bike Thule carrier on a Freelander 2 with detachable Towbar so can't see why it wouldn't work on a D4 with a detachable one. Displaced Yorkshireman.

SDV6 Auto obviously, Loire blue/Ebony, ugly kid glass, RLD wheel protector, private plate and maybe side steps.

Cheers for the links - just what I was looking for.
Having just researched suitable bike carriers on the web Maxxraxx seem to do one that attaches to a swan-neck detachable AND still leaves the towball free, so I'll get in touch with them to see whether it's compatible with an AL-KO hitch head. MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

The MaxxRaxx / Disco swan neck towbar set up is not compatible unfortunately. I changed my detachable for a fixed bar to allow me to use the MaxxRaxx whilst towing.

MaxxRaxx on my fixed tow bar gets my vote. Served us well over last 7 years and bikes did not foul on the caravan. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

I have a spare fixed towbar sat in the garage if you are after one - can email pics tonight if needed.

Thanks for the offer. I'm off on holiday at the weekend towing my tintent to Spain for a couple of months but I've made a note to get in touch with you at the end of October to see if it's still available. MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand
