|
Hi everyone,
Sorry if this doesnt make sense....too much vodka tonight......
Can you re-programme a key for the RRS / Disco 3 MY-2007 if it has previously been programmed to another car i.e. does it have to be a virgin key to be programmed??????
Thanks

Just don't forget to take a bottle of R whites with you to save you visiting the fridge in the middle of the night and bursting out into an Elvis impersonator
The Keys do indeed have 2 way wireless communications with the vehicle and when learned do store one time only vehicle information in their immobilizer chip.
It's pretty amazing how many keys are up for sale on Ebay stating they only need to be reprogrammed by a dealer etc and have a new blade cut for them when they are actually totally useless.

Colin do you know if its true that the replacement keys from the dealer have a VIN # encoded into their chip to prevent them being paired with any other vehicle (D3 specifically) - I got a "virgin" key from an OEM supplier on eBay but couldn't get it to pair with my LR3...this is the only reason I can think of for the failure.
I told the dealer I bought my D3/LR3 from that I would pay the previous owners $100 if they found their missing key...unfortunately no happy dance there so i have had to order one from UK via local LR dealer....don't plan to pay them for the pairing though now I have my MSV2 en route.

All i can tell you is that almost all manufacturers use the same immobilizer chip in their key fobs as there really is no point in re inventing the wheel. I forget the exact part number but it is a Phillips PCF something or other although currently Microchip offer some similar KEELOQ technology also, although it has not taken off.
It is really up to the user as to how the memory this chip has is actually used.
BMW apparently use it for storing loads of stuff including service history and current odometer values.
So storing a simple VIN is but childs play.
I do however believe that a key ordered by vin by a dealer is electronically blank until it is learned to a vehicle. But i may well be wrong.
Otherwise many imagine and declare a key to be new only through lack of use rather then never having been learned to a vehicle. Hire car companies selling second keys being the worst curprits of this.

I have had to ring my dealer today to ask about a new key, he has quoted 125 quid for the blank key and 35 quid to pair it with the vehicle

I have never had a D3 key in bits, but I had to have a new key programmed for my Golf just last week.
The transponder chip inside the key can only be coded to 1 car. After that, it can't be recoded. VW says new key, at £180...
The solution is, new key case of Ebay @ £7
2nd hand key/fob from Ebay @ £10
New transponder chip from http://www.hickleys.com/diagnostics/keys_list.php @ £3
Beer tokens to have it coded. New key for £30...
Have had a quick look through there, but don't list a transponder for any Land Rover, but it may be a generic one...
http://www.hickleys.com/diagnostics/keys_l...amp;menu=1
Maybe someone else will know what the chip looks like, or is compatible with...
