Sinking brake pedal (help!)

Further to my post yesterday where noticed that the front brakes creaked when stopping (only for a short time though) and all the discs being really hot to touch (but is this normal?) noticed today that when the engine is running but car not moving, I can press the brake pedal and it sinks slowly to the floor. Not all the way, but a couple of inches.

When the engine is stopped it doesnt move.

Had the brake recall done last year, have disconnected the air vacuum pip and absolutely no oil or fluid at all.

I've done a search on here and there are several posts that say the dealer/LRA etc said a slowly sinking pedal was quite normal, but others disagreed.

Have had this on two previous cars (one less than three years old) and it was the ABS pump on both occasions.

Is this normal or do I start to panic... off on holiday on Friday!

Should sink a little and stop. If it feels really different to you than before then worth getting it checked; for peace of mind if nothing else.

From the book of LR:

Quote:
Excessive brake pedal travel/brake pedal spongy:

Worn pads may make the pedal travel excessive, new pads may make the pedal spongy. Check after bedding in the pads. Check the pedal travel. If the pedal "pumps-up", suspect air in the system. Check for a cause for air ingress, rectify as necessary. If the pedal sinks to the floor when held under pressure when there are no external leaks, suspect a master cylinder fault. Refer to the relevant section of the workshop manual.

I should add that your pedal is different when the engine is not running as you are not getting any assistance from the brake booster.

Thanks Robbie, I've noticed it before but as the brakes have always worked okay have thought nothing of it, but I guess perhaps now I'm being paranoid after yesterday's experiences of creaking and hot discs (only to the touch though, not glowing etc).

All the pads, discs and flexi hoses were replaced earlier this year, so they are fairly new.

With going on holiday for two weeks and going to do a fair milage then I'm worried that she's going to take time to get a problem fixed Big Cry

I have been messing with my brakes too, with the engine off the brake pedal is rock solid, with the engine running you can press the peddle really hard and it will creep down , I think this is normal my last disco did the same

This happened on my D3 and was told by the Dealer that it was normal. Doesn't happen and hasn't happened on either of my D4's

Quite normal, this happens when the Brake Power Booster works as it should Wink

She's off to the nice mechanic indi man on Wednesday just to check it over, but he thinks it's probably working as usual. He did explain how and why but went a bit over my head. Seems strange that the same effect on two previous cars led to the something expensive on the ABS being replaced (or so we were told).

Its normal Thumbs Up

In fact, sitting stationary at idle, its quite common to be able to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor, so I can see your worry.
As long as it doesnt creep down when the engine is off, and you are not loosing brake fluid, it will be fine Thumbs Up
