Fuel cap lock

There has been a spate fuel being stolen from fuel tanks and next door neighbour just had 100 ltrs or so taken from his old jag yesterday so I checked my fuel cap just in case. It always used to lock with all doors (I'm sure) but now it remains unlocked at all times. No signs of tampering but is there any way making the fuel cap door lock again when all other main doors are locked?

The is normally a rod of some sort that locks the flap (that's how they do it on bm's) but a good pull and it breaks. I would get a locking fuel cap and replace the std one with that, though I have seen the pipe to the tank cut and fuel removed that way...

I looked into locking fuel caps and was going to have them produced
but was warned against it as the cap needs to be properly designed
either by Land Rover or in conjunction with Land Rover to prevent
the risk of implosion of the fuel tank.

Locking fuel cap

Perhaps I did not explain this very well. I think my question is should the petrol cap/ flap be locked when all the main doors are locked? At present it is open all the time and the petrol cap is therefore exposed when the flap is open.

Yes, your petrol flap is supposed to lock when you lock the car.
You can test it when you open the car, then open the fuel flap.
Look at the mechanism and then lock the car with the key fob.
Is nothing moves in the locking, then you know it's broken.
There are some topics on here that detail how to fix it.

Fuel cap flap

Thanks for the replies. I unlocked and looked at the fuel flap whilst relocking and no movement at all so it could be that it's
been tampered with what with the trouble neighbours have had. Suppose I'll have to buy a locking fuel cap as a stop gap and will search the forum for advice on how to fix it.

Much appreciated,

Terry

What I do when on holiday or business is fit a locking one
when you park up for the night, and remove it when driving
again.
I use a reminder in the car it's fitted. So that I remove it prior to driving away.

Fuel tank flap

I thought it was supposed to be almost impossible to drain down a tank in modern cars but I think I need to wisen up a bit!
This could be a very lucrative "business" for certain people at around £ 100 a tank. I've read of people having domestic fuel stolen in rural areas, which is bad enough, and this is happening in highly lit suburban London which beggars belief given the chance of being disturbed.

Are they easy to fit? There is also a locking petrol cap on fleabay via Amazon that claims to fit Discovery 3 and 4 and will pass all MOT and Euro requirements. Not sure about that so I'll take the actuator route if I can fit it. Thanks for the lead.
