Common problem apparently.....mine stays open and I enquired about the new parts.....it used to be a quick, cheap fix around £12 or so......now you have to replace the whole part at around £120 .....needless to say it can stay open "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

you could replace it with the non-smoker pack - give TLO a bell and he will source at good price.

Had this recently and wedged it shut but as I use it to hold various keys in it was not ideal so I set about fixing it which proved to be very easy and took about half an hour. Firstly remove trim panal around radio and heater facia. To do this simply grasp lower bottom of trim one side at a time and pull useing your nails to hook into edges. Lift up and hook out of upper face level vents. Undo screws holding heater facia and tie up out of the way. Undo screws, one each side on ashtray assembly, it also has two clips at upper and lower centre so pull back slightly to disengage. You can't remove it at this stage because the lower clip mount fowls the lower oddments tray which I did not want to remove as seemed a big job in itself. Disconnect the wiring to the cigerette lighter and the other side power outlet. By lifting up on the passenger side I managed to wiggle it out. Now I could see why it was not closing completely, the spring had fell in and was stopping it going the last 25mm. I simply discarded it as was happy just to have it completely shut. I sawed off the two clip mounts close to the body as I thought it a bit over the top regarding securing the assembly back in. Now without the clip mounts it went back into the car easily. Reassemble in reverse order and job done.
