If it's an "official" key from a LR dealer rather than acquired on eBay, you should be okay.

I've had a brand new key with freshly cut blade sitting on the side in the kitchen for over a year now.
Does anyone fancy trying to pair it for me?
For a fee of course, as long as it's not what a dealer would charge

Unfortunately not.
First weekend back at school for my lads means Rugby camp/training, which I'll be helping out with.

Nasher - if the regulars can't sort you I might be able to help.
Timing is always tricky, for me, but I do have your wheel bearing from DiscoDunc still...

I just wanted to add my personal and huge thanks to Geoff and JDB for figuring out the subtle aspects that mean the difference between sucess and Failure in learning a new Key to the Vehicle.
It was clear that there was some odd quirk, but as we don't have an endless supply of new Keys needing programming to vehicles, it was near impossible for us to track it down. So we really appreciate you guys giving us a hand on this.
We will add this information into the Help file and maybe add some more detail into the instructional messages that the system pops up.
It is especially great in that now the sequence for sucess is known for sure, it is easier to figure out supposedly new keys that have actually previously been learnt to a vehicle.
Unfortunately many of the Keys offered on Ebay, are second keys that came with hire car vehicles etc and so were learned to that vehicle, and are sold as new simply because they have not been used as far as the seller is concerned and of course it is easy to fit a new Blade.

There are some "virgin" keys being offered on eBay which are from China OEM and fail to bind to the LR3 even if you follow the steps.
I suspect that the dealer supplied keys are prepped in some way with a transponder tool. I've set myself a little science project or two involving some "spare" keys already paired to another vehicle and one of the eBay unpaired samples to see what's going on and whether it is possible to take a $129 key from eBay and add the secret sauce to bring it to the $260 key that the dealer hands you. Once I get some results I will post them back to the forum.
We already know how to save the $120 programming fee

I am not going to take the credit - here it was Geoffs perseverance - I just provided the facilities and the notebook! Although we did scratch our collective heads a couple of times to get it right. Still I do now understand what we were doing and have done it again with my MSV2!
Apologies for double posts above - blame it on the 'phone screen.

We had a couple of "moments"...... but did find you can store the "pairing" on a blade and fob that has a "dead battery"......

Well it scared the willies out of me the first time especially when it failed but it seems there is some kind of failsafe at work as my existing keys all worked still and nothing got bricked. I'm not sure if that gives me more confidence to try the PCM and transmission upgrades next or not....bricking an iPhone is one thing but 6000lbs of machinery is another....I guess worst case scenario I have it flat bedded to my dealer and shrug my shoulders muttering something about Gremlins.... (no I did not feed it after midnight but I might have got it wet...)

Bricking your car is part of learning

Just to reiterate what we found out
We had 3 keys 2 for Jon,s D3 and 1 new one when we paired the new key it deactivated the second key of the original keys then we reacitvated that key it deactivated the new one so it seems for the moment you can only have 2 keys activated at any one time more testing me thinks
Ps I've done 2 more keys recently with no problems at all

I took the dead key apart today and checked the battery and this is showing the correct voltage so I think it must be the unit that is dead……
On reading the posts I think I will get the dealer to do it, it all seems a bit complicated and I don’t really want to end up with a dead discovery, sorry chaps I know this is a wimp out…….
Perhaps if there was a known procedure I would have a go but it all seems a bit hit and miss?!?
Unless someone can say it’s easy to do………..
Best wishes to all
