Error messages at ignition
First post on the forums and it is a fault, hopefully solvable.
Occasionally when starting the disco I get a range of faults appear. After a few restarts of the car they seem to go away until it happens again. The issues, originally, only seemed to happen once a week but have since been occurring a little more frequent with twice a day being the current record. Want to know if it is ignoreable, easily fixable or a bit of an issue. Here is what happens:
1st Start
Message center
- Transmission fault limited gears available
- Park break fault auto release not functional
- HDC fault system not available
- Engine system fault
Warning Lights
- Gear indicator shows F
- Check engine light amber
- DSC/ETC light amber
- Break systems light amber
- Park break system light amber
So i turn it of and restart the engine
2nd Start (1st restart)
Message center
- Engine system fault
Warning lights
- Engine fault light amber
The rest of the warnings and messages don't display
3rd Start (2nd restart)
Message center
- No messages
Warning lights
- Engine fault light amber
After two or three more restarts all warning lights and messages clear and the car returns to normal. The transmission seems to be a little odd while engine light is on and then for a brief time after but soon comes good also.
After reading posts on here i was hoping it was simple fix like the battery or something that disco's like to do to keep you on edge. Been a long time fan of the cars and love this one and as such would hate to loose it after only owning it for 1.5 months. It is still under warranty and if it is a big problem would much appreciate them fixing it for me.

Could be something as simple as a brake light bulb or brake light switch... Check them first....If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

Brake light or brake light switch could be the culprit, although low battery can cause similar issues at start-up. How healthy is your battery?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Similar thing with mine. New OEM battery, no more problems

Thanks Grunders, it is good to be here.
Have had the mechanic at the car yard i got the car from have a look at the error codes to see if he could discern what may be wrong, but he didn't see anything or didn't want to (warrenty purposes). Not sure how healthy the battery is. Will have to go down to get the battery load test. If it is happening more frequently recently could that suggest the battery is on the way out? If the battery is good i will have the guy check the brake light bulb and break light switch.

I had much of the same, dealer looked at the battery several times and said it was fine. I had it replaced anyway and the faults have disappeared.

You are not understanding the point. The faulty brake light switch is upsetting the electronics and causing the fault messages. It does not cause a gearbox fault, just a message!Volvo XC60 - does all that the D4 should have done

The brake lights and switch form part of the canbus.... This interupts the communication system showing errors on the dash... Like jdhx says.. It doesnt mean the gearbox is faulty just an error essageIf it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

I know. Had the brake light switch fail on me. Got all sorts of error messages but no gearbox error message.

Hi Joshobo, did you ever get to the bottom of your problem. I have much the same issue. A new alternator has been installed, a new oem battery and still agents cannot locate the problem. They wanted to replace the ecu board. Lost money and faith in them. It would be great to have feedback from you.

No I never did unfortunately.
I am having trouble finding any pattern in it's occurrences all though I think it may be related to the suspension fault I am having. Every time I enter of road height or sometimes when the compressor is pumping up for normal height I get a suspension fault (not a bad one as the car stays in normal height mode and doesn't lower to the bump stops). My indy said it is the compressor on the way out which is fair enough, it does sound like it is struggling to build pressure.
Anyway, it seems if I get lots of the suspension errors the system wide fault happens shortly after. Not sure if there is a link or just pure coincidence. Will have to see what happens when I save enough to have the compressor replaced.
On a side note I did go out for a rather intense 4wd mission yesterday and all though I received many suspension faults I never got the other errors which I was happy about. Was following 2x patrols and a hilux, would have been embarrassing to have to restart the car 3 or 4 times. I will see if I get it in the next day or so.

my D3 is just the basic s model, so does not have air adjustable suspension.......I deliberately chose this model as myv las landy was all singing and dancing ES Premium TD5.
I am not sure how the D3 suspension works, but I had similar trates on my TD5........it turned out to be a weeping air bag on the o/s/r suspension.
