A strange thing - maybe?

Just had a great drive up to Carlisle to collect my parents and some friends who walked much of Hadrian's Wall. I had a steady run up yesterday and when I got there, the lie-ometer indicated an average of 41.6 mpg (170 ish miles).

Coming back today with the awful weather (heavy rain and strong winds), busy traffic and a loaded car, when I got home it indicated 37.9 mpg. Filling it up revealed an actual 34.4 which still ain't bad I don't think.

Now to the possible point. On the A1 just south of Wetherby I pulled into the centre lane and put my foot down. The car changed down what appeared to be two gears, and immediately it felt like I was running over a cattle grid for a second or so. I'm not sure whether I lifted off or not, but at the same time as the "cattle grid effect" there seemed to be no increase in power. There were no warnings or "bongs", and from then on the car drove perfectly again.

After dropping my parents off in Chesterfield, I gave the car a bit of stick (for me anyway), and it was perfect, kicking down as it should and going like stink (hence the increase in fuel consumption!). Does anyone know if there's a short section of the A1 there that causes the effect, or do I have a possible issue with the car?

Signed, PARANOID!

Would that not throw up a warning?

No idea, never had it in my D3 but had it once in another car with an 8 speed ZF box when headed out of my side street just by planting my foot down (at 4am so brain not engaged). It stopped after I backed off the loud peddle.

Was there a fault or was it a one-off? I take it that it was on your 520?

Yep in the 520d, same(ish) 8 speeder as in the D4. Just a one off, never done it again despite trying to replicate. I don't think it was wheel spin with TC moderating it but it could have been s'pose. Confused

Came along there at 11pm last night but didn't notice anything - not too sure now which lane I was in. Will be passing again next week so will try to remember to keep an eye out.

Presume you were heading south and had passed the services.

Yes it was southbound, south of Wetherby on the uphill left hand bend section before Junction 45 - centre lane.

Hmmmm. I'm towing the tin tent on Monday, so hopefully if there are any issues that should highlight them.

The northbound carriage way was shut when we passed last night as a result of this -

When i drove and it felt as you state "the cattle grid effect" was when i had the dreaded EPB judder, might be a long shot but could be related...
If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

Had that recently with my D4 going along the M8 - most noticeable between 50-60mph.
Stopped and checked around and set-off again. Problem has not returned.

Was there a smell like burning rubber from the rear of the Disco?

Not that I was aware of, and none of my passengers commented.

.

Does the DPF cause a smell like that?, and are there any signs when it burns off the particulates? Only ask, as after normally doing short runs, I took a longer cross country run at reasonable speeds, but little use of brakes, and there was a burning rubber smell yet no warmth at all on any wheel or the brakes & I wondered whether teh car somehow "knew" that it was having a run that was suitable to burn the dpf?
