TDV6 cranks but will not start |
|
Hi, returned from 2 weeks hols and tried to get my disco to start - the engine turns over, but will not fire. Plenty of smoke out the back would indicate diesel. No errors on the dash. Has anyone any ideas? It did happen once before when I left the disco again for about a week without starting it. Cheers.

What did you do last time, give it multiple goes with the glow plugs ie turn on coil light goes out, repeat 3-4 times then crank with your foot on the floor straight away. Also have you got fuel or has some siphoned it?

Check you have fuel delivery to the engine, there's what looks like a tyre valve on the end of a small tube at the rear of the engine, with ign off, remove cap, and press the valve, then get a willing assitant to turn the ign on for approx 10-20 seconds, you should get fuel coming out Never get mad - get even !!

Fuel tank 1/2 full. Battery is good and I have just charged it overnight. Tried warming glow plugs 4 times before starting. No luck. Checked fuel pressure tyre valve - fuel pressurises as soon as ignition turned on and continues to pump when cranking engine (didn't have to wait). Took off air feed pipe at front of engine, just before y piece - plenty of suction when cranking! Tried a big squirt of carb cleaner but made no difference. Still no errors on dash. Is it possible to flood a diesel engine?

Try a hard reset on the battery, it does sound like its the anti theft thats kicked in some how.. Also does the glowplug light on the dash go out or stay on when you turn on the ignition. It could also be the fuel pump in the tank, has the rear cambelt been done?.

Just tried full hard reset (shorting +/- cables etc), still the same - cranking not firing. Glow plug comes on and goes out when ignition turned on. Local LR specialist suggested alternator might be duff, but can't see how an alternator comes into play until the engine is running.
Thanks, Gordon

I've had a look & to check there is a supply on the VCV of the hpfp would require me to crawl underneath - however the susp. is down & it would cost me a fortune in beer 2 get some mates round to push it onto a set of ramps. Is there any other fuel cut off switch similar to peugeots of old??
I've heard injectors can give probs which may b why I get black smoke out the exhaust (unburnt fuel) but no ignition. Don't understand how they would go faulty with 2 weeks of not being used.
Thanks, gordon
