Help, Whining noise plus judder plus loss of power

Hi All
Our 2004 TDV6 HSE has started to be very sick over the last 1000miles.

Symptoms are: Flat engine response almost like partial loss of boost, a speed dependant whine mostly at 70mph and above, juddering on light throttle like a slight misfire.

Heres what Ive done, MOT last week so fitted new wheel bearing NSF, replaced intake intercooler hose, removed and checked turbo hose, inspected intercooler for dirt cracks etc. I did the 105k service a couple of days ago as got paranoid about idler/tensioner being the whine. As Id removed all the intake plastics etc had a good look around. I've read fault codes it has two repeating egr codes but they are blanked no other codes. Gearbox had a fluid change 10-15k ago

I'm pretty good with oily bits and have a very real feeling that something expensive is about to let go, i'd rather find it before it failed critically, any ideas about course of action now?

The judder that you have - ignoring the fact that yours is an auto and mine is a manual ..

The judder - is almost like a misfire and only occurs when the engine is warm, when applying power gently. If you plant the accelerator there is no judder and acceleration is brisk! When the engine is cold (ie off the temp guage) there is no judder.
The judder carries on as the revs and speed increases.
It is there from 1500rpm, but becomes most noticeable just less than 2000rpm upwards..
It does this in all gears, but is most noticeable in third + fourth
If I back off the accelerator the judder goes away – I would also say the engine is not as responsive under partial acceleration.

There is also a whine which I guess is the fuel pump belt (as I didn’t have this changed at 95k – just the timing belt).

There were no fault codes stored and none occurred when the LR engineer and I went for a drive for me to show him the problem. All the injectors appeared to be working normal, no fuel pressure issues. The entire engine sensor where reading correctly – even when the fault occurred.

In October it had a new clutch and DMF, but has been OK for 6weeks.
The judder I am sure has only occurred since the D3 was serviced a few weeks ago.

It is going into the Land Rover Specialist tomorrow, but with no fault codes to go they have no idea where to start..!

Yes.
That was a thought.
But the judder is there all the way through 5000rpm + and all works OK until normal eng temp. Let it go cool and it is OK until warm again...
Put your foot down and it pins you in the seat and pulls OK.
It is only when you gently fdeather the accelarator.

I had a slight judder on take off and it turned out to be a leaking seal in the throttle body. Check all the air intakes are sealed. Idea

Will suggest these.
On way to dealers.
Lets see how much it cost for them to find nothing ...!

Ian, I have very similar symptoms on my 55 D3 manual. Would be very keen to know the outcome of the dealer's investigation. Have been racking my brain as the symptoms isn't there when punching the throttle or when in neutral. Hope you get it sorted and please let me know the outcome. Thumbs Up

James,
it sounds as though we could have the same issue.

The dealer found nothing, but gave a lot of suggestions Exclamation
I ruled out their first suggestion - the EGR valves as both mine are blanked.
They have also decided it is not the tubo.
I have a pulley or tensioner on the front serpentine belt that is noisy – they want to change this next.
After that they want to go through all the injectors.

I think they got some crap into the fuel system when they did the service (changed the fuel filter) as there was no issue with the vehicle before then.
I am going to let the fuel in the tank run low then put some ‘forte’ cleaner through the system.
If that doesn’t work I will go to a diesel injector specialist for them to test the injectors.
As there are NO errors recorded either the judder/misfire is happening to fast for it to be recorded or it is unbiased – ie not monitored.

Still mystified as to why it only has the issue when warm.

yup, my egr is blanked also. The whining noise does sound a bit 'belt/pulleyish' but that doesn't fit with it only being audible when in gear (haven't managed to either hear the noise or sense the rev variation whilst in neutral (although that could be down to load I suppose). I have tried ignoring it but SWMBO also pointed it out during a long drive through France at Christmas - it was particularly noticeable whilst doing 70 in 6th up a gentle hill in cruise control. Out of cruise I think I have been surreptitiously setting the revs or gunning the engine to avoid the 'fluttering' region. Mine also only starts to exhibit these symptoms when warm, thinking about taking it into Steve Norman if it doesn't improve. Fingers crossed the serpentine work bears fruit!

Forgot to mention that my oil level appears v. high (was probably overfilled at the last service)... could this be related? Just a thought.

Low pressure turbo hose [leading into the turbo]. Two options ;

a. One of the hose clamps is loose and draws false air [that's what I had...] Whistle ;
b. If you thrash it regularly, tow heavy loads or tuned the engine ; ergo all situations in which the engine bay heats up above avarage, . this tube ages and cracks. Rolling Eyes to the same effect...

Just check : it is not an expensive part to replace !
