New Owner.... A question about suspension

Hi All,

I got my Disco 2 weeks ago... had it 27 hours before the first thing broke Crying or Very sad ... rear door release cable... anyway 30 quid and 2 hours later and a good trawl through this forum and all fixed... less skin, two nails and confidence in the car..

now, it seems to have decided to strip the tread from the inside of the tyres... It had some wear when I bought it, so I knew there was probably a tracking problem... but one of the front tyres has taken about 3mm off the shoulder in 1500 miles... how far out does it have to be to do that!!! Shocked

Is it worth just setting up the tracking using my trusty dunlop gauges, or should i shell out for a full 4wheel jobbie? anyone else seen this amount of tyre destruction? :

btw its a Disco3 2.7 TDV6 HSE

Thanks

BBOT

Hi and welcome to the forum Thumbs Up

Hmm . . . so did you buy it from a garage, can you go back with a list of "It needs this fixed ?"

It certainly sounds like the tracking/four wheel alignment is a tad adrift !!!

A proper four wheel re-alignment is the only real way to get it sorted, tyres 'should' last well in excess of 30k (depending on how you drive and your tyre choice obviously)

Let us know how you get on Thumbs Up

Also worth getting your suspension bushes/ball joints/track rods/ends checked as wear in these can cause problems with tyre wear, if they are ok then a 4wheel alignment Thumbs Up

Check your wheel bearings as well as they can wear the Tyre in that manner, and don't forget if you have a four wheel job done the car needs to be in tight tolerance mode to be setup the correct way.

Hi All,

thanks for the quick replies, I'll get it up and check the bearings and ball joints, first, although theres no clunks from the suspension (probably a good thing)...... then take it for a full 4 wheel this time..

I bought it from a car dealer over in Liverpool, but not the kind of place you get any sort of warranty. u pays your money and takes yer chances

I'll let you all know how I get on with it...

personal opinion, worth paying for a LR dealer to do the tracking as its got to be put in to "tight tollerance" via the ecu so unless yer tyre shop has got LR diagnostics, aint going to be able to do that correctly.

BTW, worth getting a quote from a few specialist to be able to beat the dealership down Oh and get um to do a "free health check" saying yer new to the vehicle, they'll check the bushes/arb etc as part of the healthcheck (if there any good), of course yer dont have to take um on the repairs but at least you'll know. Thumbs Up

Hello All

Right, this morning at 5:30, much to the neighbours disgust, I jacked up all four corners and tugged and pulled on the wheels, I could not make out any real play except for a little side to side on the fronts, which I guess is part of the course, with such a large vehicle, the play was in the steering rack end of the track arms, not a lot, but it was there....

next I went and had the 4 wheel track done and pointed it out, and they didn't seem to perturbed by it.. . I had the job done at a local independant in Llandudno Junction. had 3 wheels basically out of toe, by a long shot, and a thrustline pointing somewhere out of the drivers door window.. along with one wheel with dickie camber . they adjusted it all up and put it bang on the LR spec.

I took it for about a 30 mile drive and all I can say is its a different car... all the odd vibration has just gone and the rear seats have stopped the side to side samba dance they do at 70mph

I'm going to monitor the tyres over the next 2000 miles and if it holds its own and doesnt scrub the tyres to death, then Ill maybe recommend these local - north wales - guys to anyone who is interested. but so far so good Surprised Surprised

Thanks for all your input..

BBOT

edit- ah should have said these guys put it in tight tolerance mode too - Thanks for pointing that out character
