Hi was wondering if anyone knew if this is just a fuel tank guard?...so rusty it looks crap, want to take it off and spruce it up or replace for a new one. Has any one else done this? Car is a my2005.

My 2005 model was just like yours.
1 Wire brush it - filthy job as all the crap lands on your face.
2 Treat it with a rust inhibitor I use Fe-123
3 Paint it with a good 2 part Epoxy paint. I avoid Hammerite as I have found it does not last.
4 Treat it with a wax based underseal Black Waxoyl or Dinatrol.
Their speciality products are really good but more expensive than Hammerite/Waxoyl.

Phew...glad its nothing structural...cash strapped at the mo as saving up for an extension so proper job will have to wait. Will wire brush and treat it as suggested...thanks guys. Mickey, it will be coming up to yours in a few months for its annual, think a full waxoyl will be in order, also (off topic) need you to look at why I am chomping a set of scorpions on the back end every 15000 miles! Fronts have done 30k and still tip top
If so, will be tracking - but could also be worn bushes.Mark.

Middle and outside are wearing way faster than inside, middle is worst. The arb bushes were changed out about a year and a half ago...don't think any others were though. Will get it checked at its service as its a bit of a pain!
