Windscreen replacement OEM or not? |
|
Hi Everyone
After reading on here about a forum member having to replace a non-OEM windscreen 3 times before giving up and getting a OEM because of the heating element constantly failing, I am now in the position of needing a replacement myself.
Auto glass can replace for my excess of £65 for a non OEM screen but a eye watering £360 plus excess for a OEM screen.
So looking for any advice on anywhere to get a OEM screen for just my excess and are non-OEM screens really that bad?

Who are you insured with and what are the terms of your policy?

As long as you insist on a pilkington optikool screen you should be ok as i'm sure they are oem manufacturers.
i and my mate both insisted on this at autoglass and were ok.

I worked in the Windscreen game for ten years, any heated screen will be good quality.
Only Auto Windscreens own glass was plop and they don't exist anymore!
Tip, whoever comes, INSIST THEY REPLACE ALL THE CLIPS ON THE 'A' POST TRIMS !!!!!!

I'm with Swiftcover, so the cheap end of the market I think
I have just called Auto Glass as I was understanding that there screen wasn't going to be made by Pilkington but now they've just said it might be. Need to wait till its in on Monday to find out.
If it is made by Pilkington and the OEM is as well that'll be £400 for a Land Rover motiff then
Thanks for all replies, hopefully panic over

According to Swift Cover's web page the policy states they can use non OEM parts as below.
"We may choose to repair your car with parts that may not have been made by the car's manufacturer but are of a similar standard."
The more concerning thing is they don't cover the Discovery glass roof under the windscreen section.
"We will not pay:
•to repair or replace any other glass forming part of yourcar including sunroofs"

Anyone who gets the crap Chinese copy screen Auto Glass fitted to my old D3 might not agree.
1/ Thick heating elements causing distracting view in sunlight.
2/ Visible screen size reduced by a thicker black border around the glass.
3/ Heating elements that simply won't last through even one winter before failing.
3/ Bright yellow ribbon connectors that can't be hidden from outside the vehicle.
These are so bad I can now spot them on other disco's in oncoming traffic!
Never again.

Also the cheap secreens, as you look along them from the driver's seat, the view is wavy.
Do not let them fit anything other than Pilkington/OE/LR. I would go as far to say that I would pay the difference if there is no other choice!
regards

Just been looking again at Swift Cover and find a very unusual clause regarding No Claims Discount in the event of a windscreen claim. This seems to unfairly penalise those on less than full NCD
"Any payment for replacement of glass under this section will not reduce your No Claims Discount, (though at your next renewal you will no longer be eligible for any increase in your No Claims Discount according to our declared scale)."
Perhaps one of the "pit falls" of cheaper insurance.

They do! I believe they were sold by the administrators as a going concern. Article in Derbyshire Times the other week saying that they had just opened a new fitting centre at their Head Office in Chesterfield.

I've had to do that twice now on the D4 and it's cost me less than the excess my insurance co wanted for an OEM screen. Bought the screen from Guava LR and taken it along to my local reliable windscreen fitters who've always done a brilliant job at a reasonable price. It slides behind the front seats perfectly.

my oem screen (non heated) was around £240 plus vat and £80 to have it fitted by LR authorised windscreen people up the road. ok I also did the skuttle panel and the side trims/clips which all told worked out around the cost of me excess
