need information about the alternator

I just ordered an alternator for my LR3. Either my moms boyfriend will do it for free or I pay $45 to get it done. The part comes in tomorrow and my moms boyfriend is an amateur at best when it comes to fixing autos and I'm afraid to let him do it hut the price tag sounds nice. I really just want to know what parts will have to be removed or tampered with in order to replace the alternator and can an amateur such as himself be able to handle the job?

It's actually quite an easy job, if you have the correct tools, or can make a tool to get the fan off.

Generic viscous fan spanners fit the fan itself, but the other half of the pair to hold the body is quite specific.

If you search for "Fan removal" on here you'll see whats required.

It took me longer to knock up the holding tool than to change the Alternator when I did mine.

bewally Welcome.

I know Nasher, he's local to me & very competent.

I think $45 is a reasonable price, and would go for it. If not you will have to make, or acquire, the Discovery specific fan removal tool.

I am used to maintaining, modifying & repairing my three classic cars, but do very little on the Discovery/LR3.

Good luck either way, and tell us what you decided and how you got on.

If the garage is doing the job, try and hand around to see what’s involved.

The most important thing he needs to do is open the bonnet ( hood) and then let the car go to sleep and then remove the main battery lead, then its quite an easy job as described above in the posts.

Flack Thumbs Up

As Nasher says, it's a simple job really.......providing you have the tools
You need to remove the air-tube that runs across from the air box just behind the rad, 2 visible screws and 1 jubilee clip.
Then remove the black plastic cowl that sits on top of the rad and covers the top of the fan. There's 4 push in clips to remove.
Next is the fan, it can be a bit of a Censored , it's a left-hand thread and the pulley it's attached to needs holding.
Then you can remove the aux belt by holding the tensioner with a breaker bar.
It's only 3 or 4 bolts to release the alternator, un do the main cable and un plug the other at the back.
I can't remember whether you need to remove the top plastic cover off of the engine or not, so you might want to just to give abit more space. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
And what Flack says above Embarassed Embarassed

Despite trying to do everything myself because I enjoy it, and to save money, NJSS has a really good point, because $45 sounds like a very good price to fit one.

Oh and thanks NJSS for the vote of confidance Thumbs Up
