Transmission Fault - engine not even starting

Gents of great wisdom and knowledge.....

Disco 3, 127k miles, 2007 2.7TDV automatic. Full service history.

Yesterday came up with an HDC Fault, Transmission Fault Limited Gears available.
Went into 'safe mode', turned round and crawled the 10 miles home at 5mph. It did this once before about a year ago, and it was a one off as it cleared upon restart.

So..... Today, jumped in to see if the fault was still there, Went up a slight incline, same again, but this time the engine stopped and will not restart. Turns over but nothing...... No indication on the dash of any faults as the Transmission one clears upon restart.

So i now have a large expensive lump of metal in my drive which doesnt do anything....

Do any of you wisened men/women have any ideas? Had anything similar to this problem before?

My initial thoughts are lack of fueling? But because it has more computers in it than NASA, and i dont have a fault reader, im at a bit of a loss until i take it to a dealer.

Luckily i also have an Isuzu Trooper to tow the @~#"£% thing home. Rolling Eyes Wink

Cheers,

Simon

non educated guess - fuel pump related ie low/high pressure fuel pump as any fuel in the system would have drained back after standing overnight but will still crank but have no fuel coming to it from the tank.

Get someone to sit in it and turn the key to position 2 whilst yer on yer hands and knees towards the rear o/s (around the fuel filler) and listen for a whinning noise as the low pressure pump in the tank activates but does'nt pump Thumbs Up

So when this happended a year ago, did you get it plugged in for fault codes or just left it Rolling with laughter

Another option could be cambelt related given yours is an 07 plater Big Cry

Not cambelt, as that would have stopped it dead. He says it crawled home. LP fuel pump I reckon.

Or two problems, whatever's causing the shutdown and a goosed battery that has chosen this time to show its cards.

Cheers guys.

Yesterday before i started it, i checked the battery voltage at cold, 12.38V, and after i had started it was 14.6V, so i would presume the battery and alternator was fine.

I'll have a listen for the fuel pump working this morning. As it had a full service and timong belt done 7000 miles ago last November, i assume the fuel filter isnt clogged in such a short time....

As i have just moved house up to the Turriff area of Scotland, does anyone know if there is someone local to me who has a computer/fault code reader? Otherwise its a 40 mile to to Town and County (main dealer) in Aberdeen!
Its unfortunate as i just moved from where i was 1 mile from Mike Aitken 4x4!!

Typical. I hate cars....... Confused Confused

Cheers!!

Simon

edit: as for the fuel pump, it makes a cyclic noise. Starts with a 'tinny' clunk then whirr. Stops and starts again. Does it for about 2 seconds before it starts again.
As for when it did this before, as the fault didnt manifest itself again so we didnt investigate. Had its fault codes cleared during last service.

An 07MY you say?

Hate to be the one who gives you the bad news, but this may well be your issue...

Crying or Very sad

EDIT: Maybe not if it still drove, but would be worth checking the HPFP belt firstly

Its a 2007 - registered December 28th 2007. Ex police car.

Im hoping its fuel. It actually started today, for about 15 seconds. Sounded normal then stalled. Took a bit of turning over mind for it to start.....

Edit: HPFP - High Pressure Fuel Pump?

LOL yeah.. 127k miles. I got it at 115k miles 18 months ago... They seem to have got shot just as it needed its timing belt done!! It did get serviced every 6000 miles by the Police.

Unfortunately i go on holiday on Tuesday, so i doubt i'll get much done with it until after then.
Looks like i'll be taking advantage of the AA's free shuttle service to the garage of my choice. Laughing Rolling Eyes

Well, i took advantage of the AA Freight Forwarding service to my independant dealer who will have a looK at it this week for me, but according to the AA man, after plugging his computer into it, Fault code U0202 came up and there was no pressure at the fuel pressure transducer when turning over....

Whether linked to the limited gears transmission problem we shall find out soon.

Simonfr - Hopefully your transmission fault was caused because engine ecu was busy running around like a headless chicken due to your possible fuel issue and therefore didn't communicate with your gearbox ecu which then got its knickers in a twist and threw up a fault, this has happened to me on a couple of occasions now,i would be suprised if you have a transmission fault but then i'm often suprised in this life!!!

Well. It's official. Fuel Pump in the tank is goosed.
No other fault codes showing relating to the transmission fault. Highly likely the transmission faulted due to engine power loss due to lack of fuel.

We shall however find out when the new fuel pump is fitted.

So for the princely sum of 2 hours labour and a new fuel pump, I should hopefully be back on the road.....
