No, no, turn off that music and put away the limbo stick, this is a thread on tyre tread
The legal limit for road tyres is 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of a tyre. It seems that on a discovery one should probably change quite a bit before this. No? Yes? If so, how much before? How low can you go?

Yep agree, no less than 3mm
Would'nt even dream of running a 2.5 ton vehicle on anything less.
Personally I change mine when they get to 6mm [but there's method in my madness].
It's a strange one though .... as 1.6mm is the legal UK limit, there's bound to be a huge difference in braking performances between for example a Micra an a Disco.
One would've thought the EU Bureaucrats would've stepped in and provided a min depth dependant on vehicle weight/size ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I think you should all change your tyres at 8mm.

Thanks guys
Much of this thread was to enable me to convince the wife that spending a large amount of money on new tyres at this point is reasonable and acceptable. Ours have around 4-5mm left, but the principle remains that changing earlier than 1.6mm is a very good idea generally. We'll be going on a 3000-4000 mile journey around Europe in a few weeks time, and I'll just feel more comfortable having a new set of tyres. I'll be visiting AJS4x4 pretty soon for some GG AT's...

I agree and give me the old ones
I think for road use 1.6 is ok for summer months and 3mm for winter.
Interestingly a company near me that has been operating several years buys sound tyres that have been taken off because they have reached the legal UK limit and ships them to South Africa to be used again. It can when others can't,

In theory that sounds fine, but then look at the deluge we've had and this is 'summer', so 1.6mm not really appropriate. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧
