Air con leak

Hi all,
I have an air con leak, to the point that it holds for about 3 hrs then all is lost. Shocked
the problem is i cant find it,even had dealer put some dye in and look for it but they said they couldnt see one and it seemed ok for them, which it did untill 2 hours after i got it back. Mad

its driving me nuts, i want it fixed for hols in 4 weeks, does anyone have any ideas where to look Question

with the fact that i cant see any evidence of a leak , is it more likely to be in the depths of the dash and a biatch to get to Sad

Andy (Help!!!)

Hmmm ... any refrigeration engineer worth their salt will be able to find it for you. As there's a known leak, adding further R134a gas is ILLEGAL under the Montreal Protocol. As to the fixing, that's liable to be a serious PITA ....

Likely places are:
1 - Evaporator (buried in the dash, as you suggest)
2 - Condenser (extra 'radiator' mounted in front of the main rad)
3 - Corroded pipework (more prevalent on cars with rear a/c)
4 - Compressor drive shaft oil seal failed (pore likely on cars where the system isn't used often)
5 - Porous flexible hose
 Regards,
Mick

have you got rear aircon ?

if so so there is a fair chance its leaking from corroded pipes that run along the passenger side sills from wheel arch to wheel arch. they tend to corrode on the bend.

Sounds like what happened to ours, a mechanic i know regassed it for us as ours wasnt cold, it held for a little longer than yours maybe 6 hours, he hadnt been able to spot a leak. Took it to local Landrover and they identified rear aircon pipes leaking. They wanted wait for it ......... £389.33 to fix Big Cry . Luckily we had only had the car 4 weeks so managed to force the dealer to pay for the repair as it wasnt covered under the 'Select warranty'.

A small leak can be a nightmare to find even for the pros with UV detection equipment. Normally a small leak that takes weeks to lose the gas, is down to dry and leaking "o" rings. Thumbs Up
