Off roading on Salisbury plain

Evenin' mukkas

This Friday we are moving house down to Dorset.

I've been doing some work for a company in Salisbury for the past 3 years and will be doing a fair bit more for them. anyhows on my regular commute down there I've been cutting across Salisbury plain and often wondered about off road potential on the various by ways and army tracks.

So you knowledgeable peeps, who lives round there and knows what what ?

we have an annual (and often a summer) day out on the plains. You just need to get the MOD schedules of what bits are "live" and what bits aren't .

Pretty much all of it is non damaging except for one bombhole that I know of. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

Transmission Flush
Software updates/enabling

Cheers both, just what I'm after !

Could do with a lead vehicle before I go and get myself into trouble.

Are all of the military roads open to the public, assuming they are not live ?

All military roads are most deffo not open access, they have seized vehicles from peeps using the army tracks that are not proper open byways. Not a place to try & replicate Jezza Clarkson in the RRS. Whistle

Look for an organised event, some clubs organise these. Then you'll be safe from heading off in the wrong direction and upsetting the range warden, and if you do you can point at the dude taking point and blame him. Laughing Laughing

I'd recommend an up-to-date 1:25,000 map. There was a big effort recently to sign-post the rights-of-way, or there's a good online map at

But as others have said that's only half the story and you need to check with the MOD (or at very least pay attention to the gates and flags).

Lastly, please be respectful to the wardens and other users, and switch off while horses pass. It's a beautiful place and long may it remain somewhere we can all enjoy!

That's exactly why I didn't want to just go up there prior to researching what's what and ending up either in a whole heap of bother or getting everyone a bad rep.

SCOR are there on the 14th October, AWDC two weeks later on the 28th.
Both events are for Safari racing, so opportunity for spectators to freely drive around will be very limited.
It's fun to watch though! Despite the cost of living, it remains as popular as ever!
