Both side lights not working

I have been getting the dreaded Christmas Tree faults randomly occurring over the last few weeks out of the blue (isn't it always!).

Noticed this morning that both front side lights are not lit when the lights are switched on at the dashboard. I normally leave it on "auto" for lights so don't normally worry about them.

I will check the obvious fuses etc, but wondered what else might cause both side lights to fail at the same time? Relay perhaps? Doubt its the switch as they don't come on when moved to full headlights or auto. I will of course check the bulbs in case both have failed at once.

Could something like this cause the Christmas Tree lights / suspension / brakes / gearbox malarkey?

Finally bought an IID tool which is winging its way to me from BAS special delivery so will be able to look at fault codes etc very soon, but in the interim I am a bit scuppered as the faults are totally random. I could switch the lights off (which may cure it) but then I can't drive in rain / fog / night until fixed, which is a bit limiting given the nights are closing in.

Any ideas for a quick fix before the IID tool arrives?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Have you tested the bulbs? They were both fitted at the factory at the same time Smile

I have found that the bulbs often show signs of being overrun. That is a mirror like coating which obscures the light. More relevant to the current problem is the tendency for the bulb contact leads to oxidize and cause a poor connection. A temporary fix for diagnosis can be a thump on the side of the light fitting. By the same token if you have recently gone over a bump it may have moved the bulbs slightly.

Given all of the above, I would suggest getting new bulbs and changing them.

All other lights working as expected. It was just the front side lights that were dead.

Fiddled around with everything and replaced bulbs, fuses etc. Lights working again but back to the main point of the post.

Could having both side light bulbs not working cause the Christmas Tree on the dash and all the engine shut down stuff? In other words, when the automatic lights came on due to low light or rain, the car electric systems freaked out because they couldn’t “see” the front side lights and had a hissy fit?

IID tool arrives tomorrow so I can get a better look at the fault codes but really interested in other peoples views if something as silly as this could have such a major impact on the car?

Cheers
