Best wheel size for widest tyre choice

As the title suggests, I'm keen to know what wheel size offers the widest range of tyre choice? I'm keen to have a second set for winter/snow (ski trips included) and moderate offroad use. Nothing extreme, but needs to be able to cope with mud/clay tracks and soggy pasture/untended fields in the depths of winter. I would expect to chuck this wheel/tyre combi on the car in late October and remove them in March, with maybe 8,000 road miles during that time.

Over to you guys!

off road rubber

Had the same issues as you and I went for a set of 17 and cooper st's good on road but with a bit more noise and you do notice abit more of the road surface due to the stiffer side walls but great in the dry as far as handling goes and I take it a slower in the wet than i did with raod tyres as the abs kicks in sooner under hard breaking, very good off road, I am not into really extreme stuff but they are good for muddy greenlanes etc, if you need more grip try the cooper stt but they look very hardcore and your on road performance may suffer
