Raised Air Intake concerns

Hello folks,
I installed the Raised air intake to my disco 3 but I have concerns regarding waterproofness and there was a piece of paper in the box with a writing of:
AP-01171
319 RAI F/KIT

I think that 319 stands for L319 discovery 3 and the F/Kit is filter kit?

The air pipe inside the fender was made of paper and the elbow near the air box had many (about 40) holes which I had to put silicone and closed them. The elbow near the air intake was also had a gap and was stapled to the air pipe. So how is this raised air intake waterproof? The Safari Snorkel however is waterproof all the way. We had to use silicone to seal all the gaps.

Any ideas?

It's not. And that is why it is marketed as a Raised Air Intake and not a snorkel. Thumbs Up

The answer is in your two discriptions:

Snorkel: waterproof

Raised air intake: Not waterproof,

just a raised air intake. Not ment for swimming, just raising the air intake point above the dust, great for the desert.

Hi
The rai is not meant to be waterproof its mainly used to receive clean air above car level when driving in dusty conditions.
It can be made waterproof but it's a lot of messing about
If you want to water wade then really a snorkel is your best bet
Dunc Thumbs Up

Thanks for clearing that Smile So since it is not a snorkel is there way to make it? How about adding missing inner parts for disco 4? A solid pipe with elbow and another elbow. They all have seals. Would that work?

yes it would and has been done. But dont be fooled into thinking it will make it a submarine. there are other water issues when you exceed the wadingdepth.
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

If you go too deep in flowing water it could partly float & be carried away. I'm not joking, that happened to someone here a couple of years ago and his D3 was written off.

Ahh yes. I am aware of that. I am thinking of the RAI/snorkel as a last resort but not to treat the car as it was a Defender. If I be in the middle of the flood I would simply open the doors and let the water in and not care about the car at that time. The car is insured and I think that would be the last thing I'd be worry about at that time.

i was thinking more of the vent below the
windscreen and electrics splash proof at best.

also breather pipes may need moving.

never seen a landy float away but ones i
have been in through rivers filled up inside but did see a suzuki samari drift away in only one metre of water.
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

the electrics will get trashed well before the water enters the air intake with a RAI on. Even with a snorkel you wont be able to drive through the deep water. if you keep a good bow wave the design of the car means that the air intake is in the trough of the wave and the water line is below the intake anyway.

been through water 1000mm deep and maybe deeper with just the normal RAI Thumbs Up

I understand the water getting in concern for pleasure but I think of the snorkels to be used for emergency situation for these cars. My priority is keeping the engine running in such situations and not have to worry about the car. Of course I wouldn't want the water come in at any time.

they do float quite well .... There is too much electrickery on the D 3 / 4 to be static in water deeper than the air intake with or wiv out a snorkel imho if you are that deep you will have probably killed it
Don’t worry it is supposed to sound like that...honest

If your tyres are big enough you don't need a snorkel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twocyBdCLIM

Apologies for raising an old thread!

I intend to fit a snorkel, (to protect the engine from water!) And what I believe is that the RAI as fitted to the G4's etc is NOT waterproof, but something like the Safari one would be, right?!!!

I have had Safari snorkels before, but think they look "awkward" on the D3?! So I was going to get a G4 style one, I presume from reading this thread I can't and it will need to be a Safari ?
Trust in those who dare and you shall also win.
