Front brakes and pads

I am told these are 'below minimum thickness'.

then was quoted £476 to replace them. Big Cry
surely front discs and pads are not this expensive on a disco!!!

Is that parts & labour for new disks & pads, inc VAT?

Buy the parts from TLO, and fit them yourself, or get an Indy rather than a dealer to do it.

Yes I hope VAT is included in that!!!

I am not competent to do it myself, its just not an option.

The last indy I used mucked up my rear brakes and I had to have them done again at a LR dealer.

nowhere near that

genuine front pads are around 50 quid for a set, a set of genuine front discs, 150ish (I seem to recall about 75quid each - but not 100% sure) - ask nick at Yeovil LR (thelargeone) on here for a price.

You can get plenty of non genuine pads and discs if you dont mind non LR.

very easy to fit yourself, only specialist tool is Bodsy's brake bible - found here: http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=4184

tells you how to do it

I did say I couldn't, and I really can't so please stop giving that as an option. Sad

I prefer genuine LR, what I am after is do all dealers actually charge this? Or is it way OTT.

OK - previous poster beat my post, so we'd both said do it yourself - which you cant

Was that price from a large chain dealer (stratstones or the like) - do you have any other dealers that are still independant (I know there arnt that many now) closish to you?

It is at Stratstones.

I've tried Lancaster Welwyn and hated the poor service so much I've abandoned them.

I tried Aylmers who mucked up my rear brakes and I had to have the shoes redone less than 3 months later.

Honestly, nobody good seems near me. Sheep

10forcash is a site sponsor and mobile D3 guru. He's based in Derby so his fuel cost down to you won't me much, and he'll do a proper job with genuine parts for a reasonable price.

I can vouch for 10forcash - top man, but he is often very busy my advice would be to talk to him NOW.

If Iain is busy can someone recommend good Indies within a reasonable distance from Tonigmr2 - it would help to know where in Herts you are please?

You might want to consider upgrading to LR V8 discs at the same time. The calipers and pads are the same as your TDV6, you just need to buy the larger carriers (brackets that hold the calipers in place). The actual V8 discs are only a few quid more than the TDV6 discs.

I did the front first and the rears later when they needed changing. IMO, it's a great modification, with noticeably more braking power.

BUT, you can't use 17" rims with the V8 discs fitted.

All parts were bought from TLO.

Any competent mechanic or garage can do the work. But as above, I know those who use 10forcash and he comes highly recommended.

He did my front pads and rear disks & pads last summer, plus cleaned & adjusted the EPB gubbins. The way to go. Thumbs Up

Definitely. Iain and Steve Norman are they only people who've touched the brakes on our D3 and we've never had a problem (with the brakes) - I think there's a correlation!

I think you will find £476 inc vat is about the right price, parts will be over £300 for genuine LR, plus 3 hours labour = £476. Just hope they don't find anything else wrong.

If you are heading round the bottom of the M25, drop in and see Andy (AJS site sponsor), he is 30 seconds north from junction 8. Great price and excellent service. Just over half of what Dealer quoted.

Thanks very much for the helpful replies chaps.

I picked up my car without the repair, which led to a bit of grief as they wanted me to sign paperwork saying I'd declined an urgent repair and I refused.

It turns out the pads have loads of meat on them but the discs are 'under manufacturer specification of 27mm'. Right then, discs are a bit worn, but pads are OK. To me that is not dangerous. I intend to get a few more miles out of them before changing them.

BTW what is it that every dealer always wants to change your ball joints and drop links. It's starting to pi$$ me off. It went through an MOT with 'play' only a couple of weeks ago, so it can't be that bad can it.
