Hi
I'm looking to replace my air filter on my D3 SE model
Been looking at K&N filters etc.
Has anyone upgraded there's , and if so which one is the better.

honestly they aren't worth the bother.
The oil that the filter is coated in can damage the air meter
and they always look like they need cleaning

Just change the normal filter every year, not every 3 that LR think you'll need.

Read this and then carry on with the std cheapo paper ones
If k+ns and the like were that good for power and mpg, commercial users would fit them and ive never come across one in 30 yrs.
Also all the oil cotton gauze type are a pita to clean/service.
What I have noticed with cars and trucks over the last 10/15 years is how much longer air filters stay clean, which is weird as the air is supposedly much dirtier than its ever been?

Just out of interest, what are you hoping to achieve by changing the filter?

In the past ive always upgraded the air filter in my hot hatches.
just wanted peoples opinions to see if it was worth it or not
I respect this guy has taken the trouble to conduct tests....but
Taking snippets of the media & doing tests like those done arent that comparitive (I've purposely not said that "scientific")
Automotive Pleated paper filter elements (like most high performance air filters) work on the principle of using a very fine media (discriminating very fine particles) with a HUGE surface area. Protecting the engine well. The way things are done with industrial air filters.....fine media + large surface area.
As opposed to a filter with a more open media that will pass more air flow with the impression of greater engine breathing / performance.....but let fine particles through....which may compromise the engine.
An IC engine needs a large volume of clean air to operate properly (or at all) it has to be clean to preserve the engines "life" & cope with occasional use in very dusty conditions.
OK oiled ar filters were the norm at times in the past but not nowadays.
Air filters changed regularly are simple low cost maintenance. Worth doing.BREXIT - done properly.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Had my Defender remapped and the tuner suggested an ITG filter. Bought and fitted and a few thousands miles later I had a slight "miss" at high revs. Tracked the issue down to an oil coated MAF sensor. Cleaned and replaced with an OEM filter and what a difference.
Had a moan at ITG and they begrudging sent me a new filter. Stayed in the garage for a few years until I threw it out.

Taggart...
Serious amount of time actually...wish it were different.
Happy to help !
In the long run it pays to look after your kit.BREXIT - done properly.

There was another yank who did same style test but what he did was apply a little smear of grease on the inlet tract clean side of the filer, ran a make of filter for so may miles/time and wiped the grease off with some clean white cloth, he did this with several different makes of filters incl k+n, when comparing the white bits of cloth the k+n had let the most dirt through.
Again not scientific but certainly makes you think.
Over the years ive tried most of this stuff out on old fashioned diesels and more modern common rail ones and TBH I cant say I ever noticed any difference from std.

When you take the inlet manifold off a car with EGR it'd make the K&N 'dirt' look insignificant.
I still don't think it's worth putting one on though.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Not inlet manifold but inlet tract ie inches after the filter which is the clean side of the ducting.
