MOAB 2012

Hello All,

We recently spent a few days down in Moab for Memorial day; took the tin tent and went via a new route to avoid roadworks. We did not realise it took us over a 9,114 ft summit Shocked

That combined with up to 45mph headwinds conspired to give 7mpg Big Cry

It was so windy on the first morning the entrance to the campsite blew down!

So first off we headed for Seven Mile Rim. SWMBO was navigating, hence we took a wrong turn and ended up on a closed trail, just as wide as the car at points, with a 500ft drop off to the side. Very precarious at a couple of bits where the trail was washed away, and past big boulders with only a couple of inches clearance.. We got about 2 miles down before we had any chance of turning around.

Bit snug at the 'Toast Rack'

I did not get pics of the most challenging bits - some precarious angles and big drops. One daughter was crying in the back, any my wife was in a state of mild panic Whistle

Then at one point the drop down was so angled all our weight was on the front right wheel, with the back left in the air. Slightly worrying but the LR took it all in her stride. Needless to say at this point I did not hop out for a Kodak moment...

In the evening a friend on the campsite said he wanted to drive soem slickrock in his Jeep. It's easy he said, so we thought we'd tag along before dinner. Turned out it was Hell's Revenge! Shocked

The car could do with some new tires really, but handled what felt like vertical ascents and descents with no drama's - it was amazing.

Here is a Hummer that was in front of us showing off for the tourists:

You can see the route we took across the rocks

and heading back out for a well deserved beer - we only did part of the trail as it was getting dark.

Next day we decided to do Top of the World. Not the best choice in hindsight.

There was a big - and i mean big - set of steps up 3 miles in - got the front up but it felt like we'd ground out, so backed off slowly - and caught the bullbar as we dropped off, bending it's brackets under the weight of the car. Embarassed

Apart from that it was hugely bumpy on the way up, and we missed the stunning view at the top (would it be unkind of me to mention who was navigating Whistle ) ans started looping back down (no room to turn around).

When we reached the bottom the wife mention the guide gave warnings against going down that way, but she did not say anything as she did not want to worry me Evil or Very Mad Cue a very long a bumpy descent - if I did not have a bullbar and rear hitch I'd have lost my bumpers, and I now have an impressive amount of nature's pinstripes. Cue more panic / crying..

Of course these pics are the not the intense bits, and never seem to make it look as tough as it does from the drivers seat!

Finally made it out (mainly) intact.

Good trip all in all. Looking foward to getting that RLD sump plate I picked up second hand on here - I need it!

Cheers

I've added one pic. Watched 'John Carter' on DVD yesterday; I knew much of it was filmed around Moab / Lake Powell. Spotted that early on where he's escaping from the fort and runs into the Indians, they ride across the plain in the picture below, with the stone spire clearly visible Thumbs Up

(Also see the last pic in the main post - another pic of the same area, you can see it in the film)

I assume you have also checked out 'Thelma and Louise'? The scene where they lock the cop in the boot of his car was filmed in Arches National Park.

Indeed, and the bit off the cliff was in Dead Horse state park - I think I posted a pic of that last year.
