| Goodyear MTR's - Sorry NO Kevlar reinforcement for Europe |

Just thought I would put this info out on the forums with regard to Goodyear MTR's, for D3's etc. I have just got off the phone this afternoon after speaking to the guys at Goodyear (Dunlop) technical department. I and I suspect many others out there may have been under the impression that the Goodyear MTR tyres sold in the UK and Europe had Kevlar in their construction. Goodyear have informed me that this is not the case, only the MTR's made for the American market are reinforced with Kevlar in the side walls. Goodyear have no intention to produce a European variant of this American made tyre.
I have been running Goodyear MTR's 255/55/R19's on my D3 and have suffered a couple of sidewall punters while travelling through Morocco this year. One thing I have noticed is that with a fully laden D3, with the rear tyres at 48psi, that the side walls bulge by approximately 10mm more than a similar D4 running Scorpion ATR's at the same pressure!
Goodyear did say that they had been getting +ve feedback on the New Goodyear Duratrak tyres that several people had fitted to D3's. Mike

The older Euro MTR's had Dura-Wall which was a re-enforced 'triple' skin cross cord sidewall ...they are still showing on the EU \ UK website ...are they still going to be available ? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The current Goodyear MTR's in 255/55/R19 will be available as soon as Goodyear get round to manufacturing some more.
I tried to get a couple before heading off to Morocco and was informed by Goodyear UK that there was no stock available. Having spoken to them today the situation has not changed in over 8 weeks.
By the way, a friend of mine has sent his Goodyear MTR's back to Germany as the tread is badly worn and cracking after only 16,000 miles. Mike

Just a quick note on the current MTR's they are only a 2 ply side wall according to Goodyear, yes they do have Dura-Wall sidewall, but apparently that is the "rubber" compound that they use in the sidewall according to technical. Mike

The only information I have was provided by the Goodyear Tyre Technical support guy, the problem apparently is different tyres are manufactured for different markets and sometimes they have the same name, but are not the same construction. So unless the guy at Goodyear gave me some duff info, I am not sure. All I know is that the Pirelli Scorpions at the same pressures do not bulge in the side-walls like the Goodyear MTR's do. Mike

Grey imports are available in the UK. But I saw them on a Jeep, so that figures if the kevlar ones are US spec. only.

If you have a problem with a grey import, who you gonna call ????.....Ghostbusters................. what about "E" marking. ?
The product launch for MT/R was about two weeks ago in Europe but as yet we have no further info.

My mate with the Jeep would just buy new tyres if he had a problem with his imported MTR's, that the UK tyre company he bought them from couldn't sort out. He's well aware of the consequences and has no concerns about quality issues from Goodyear. The US is far more litigious than the UK (but we're catching up).

48psi sounds a bit too high to me and may explain why you've had sidewall punctures. I doubt how much they bulge is very relevant on a properly inflated tyre, especially when comparing different makes and types of tyre. More bulge many just indicate it's more flexible (not weaker) and therefore able to withstand a side impact more. Over-inflating could increase the chance of side wall damage just as much as under-inflating. If that's 48psi cold it'd be lots higher after running for a while over there.
I've been to Morocco several times now running a fully laden D3 running MTRs with rear pressures (when cold) at 40psi (fronts at 35) when not in deep sand and haven't had a puncture yet (okay I had one but still did a 100 or so miles off-road with a tent peg firmly embedded in the tyre before it deflated enough for me to notice  ). Flying up a stony hill during DS2006 I bent a rim but the tyre was fine and reused later. Another MTR ended up with a golf ball sized lump in the side but was still holding strong 5k later when I finally got round to changing it The End

I had a bad experience with MTRs but I think it was down to me being a crap driver  .I had sidewall damage on 3 Mtrs and have never had the confidence in them since.
Highly recommend the mickey Thompson and BFG tyres as I haven't had drama with either since and I'm still a crap driver! "you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"

Have seen lots of sidewall damage on MT/R's over the years but maybe down to people getting to places where others can't.
With the ability of the D3 and more so the D4 I do wonder why people feel the need to go to these tyres, maybe it boosts them to the level of a good driver with a not so aggresive tyre. I will duck down now to avoid the stoneing.
