Rear diff whine. Any chance of catastropic failure? |
|
The dealer told me last service that the rear diff is on its way out But the thing is ; about a year ago we checked oil status in front/transfer/rear diff's and they were still OK. Then the fluids had been in there for just 8000 Km's and were still honey coloured and NOT smelling burned But just 20.000km's later the mechanic gave me the hint it needs replacing But as far as I can hear [a bit deaf] the whine did not get any louder or grumbling like some postings suggest as the 'last stage'. I guess checking the oil again would give a clue, but also I think what's the 'worsed-case-scenario' . Will it fail catastrophicly like blocking bothe rear wheels on the highway, spinning out of the road or just breaking up the transferbox in the process ??? Who had anything like this happen with the rear diff ? Please let me know, because I'm not happy at forking out € 1200 if I can drive it 20k more anyway. But the thought of a serious accident or colateral damage to the mechanics is not too inviting either... Please share your experiences or even hearsay..

will take out the respective driveshafts when it fails, leave yer stuck at the roadside or with no drive or both, could fail whilst doing a critical overtake, could put your well being at risk or that of your family or other road users.......additional strain on the transfer box
TBH, yer dont want to leave it till it breaks, just get it done
From a man who's just had a new front diff and also a new nsf driveshaft coz he ignored the warning signs
BTW, when my rear diff went, first signs were the seals failed weeping oil, then two days later the nsr driveshaft came out and left me with 3x4..... but hey all the fun of owning a D3 yer never know what might happen

Thanks Caracter, I'll get it done before the summerholidays... But this weekend we'll be off to Paris 8) Hope it can do another 1000km's... Just went to France a few weeks ago and didn't hear anything... Seals aren't leaking at all So how loud was the noise with your rear diff? As I've said ; I'm a bit deaf, but can hear the difference in tire rumble on tarmac, concrete or cobbles. Was the noise level comparable to driving over a cobbled road I'll contact the dealer and scedule it for the week after... Thanks again

I doubt it will fail catastrophically. It will deteriorate though. It will last another 1000km for sure, but I'd get it changed ASAP as it's very annoying when driving around and you know it can get worse any time soon. Dennis

Had the same with my LR3, year 2008. Was renewed uner warranty at around 50K km. Soon there after same at the front also replaced under warranty at around 70k km. Seems the coating inside and oil do not go well together.

It will run indefinitely and just get noisier and noisier. Finally you will go insane from the noise. If can be repaired if you are interested. Send me a PM and I can try to help steer you in the right direction. The problem is bearing deterioration due to rust. You can check out some pictures of what it might look like in my gallery.
As others mentioned, additionally wear and tear on the rest of the drive train, but I doubt it will fall apart on you, prolonging it until a convenient time should be fine.

Hi tlt, nice set of pictures ! I went to Paris [France], about 1300km's all together. On the way back [not the main highway along Brussels / Antwerp, but a smaller local highway from Reims], a road with lots of hills, I
could hear quite a range of whines depending on the load on the rear diff [ 5 p and luggage]. Now w're home
I drag the horsebox around and so also a lower grumble around 60Kmh appears... I made an appointment with the dealer for next wednesday. Wil costs € 1150 including labour... From the pictures it shows you have your own D3 repairshop? Or is it only diffs you do? Bit far for me though, but interesting for US forum members

Diff was replaced today, was original one [date sticker on the housing ]. Now the deafning whine has gone Only going uphill, I now hear a weak whine... next bearing to go....
Moving the bearings left/right in the diff ; could feel change in friction... So probably rust as 'tlt ' mentioned before why don't they put some rust inhibitor in that lubricant....
