Oil Service indicator came on today.

I turned the key this morning, and saw something that I have not seen before, although in a way, I wish I had.

It said "Oil Service 600 Miles"

Now I know I was waiting for this to happen for 3000 miles prior to the 15k service I just had. Why it should have suddenly appeared god only knows.

According to this message, It now needs an oil change in 525 miles! (I did 75 miles today).

It has only done 1600 since its 15k service, so its back to the dealer again to get it set properly.

Funny thing is, when I told the dealer that the indicator had not come on when it should have to remind me of the upcoming service, they replied that it was not a Discovery feature and only applied to the Range Rover.

Now lets see them eat their words Twisted Evil

Now I think about it, It could possibly be one of the bug fixes on the latest car configuration release. My car went in last week, after the service to have the suspension calibrated. When I collected it, he mentioned something about full clear and re-configuraton of the whole car. So maybe thats what brought it on. But why it says 525 miles and not 14475 miles to oil service, I don't know.

This is official (according to my dealer!)

Called in at the dealer today, and showed them the evidence. To say he was suprised is an understatement.

He gave me a cup of coffee, and asked me to hang on while they took the car into the workshop.

30 minutes later, it reappeared. The service indicator was no more.

The explanation is that the car knows when it needs a service, and will start to count down 1000 miles before it needs service. The reason mine came on 1600 after the service is that they did not reset it at the service, and the car was only telling me when it thought it needed a service (17600 miles).

So I said "this means that the service interval is not strictly 15000 miles as you have previously told me, and so I booked my service earlier than I could have?" Yes thats about it was the reply. "You don't need to book your next service until the indicator says so" was his next statement.

I think this is important, as the service is expensive enough without getting every possible mile out each interval.

Perhaps we could all ask our dealers the same questions, and see if we get uniform answers.

My dealers have told me that I should wait until the car tells me it needs a service irrespective of whether I have reached or exceeded 15000 miles - apparently its dependant on your driving style Question I also asked the likely cost for the service which will be between £240 -£300 Evil or Very Mad there seems to be quite a difference between dealers on this, I'm going to email mine and ask why theres is more than others and why its not just a fixed amount.

Thats interesting..I went to my local dealers website to the contacts section and they have removed all the email addresses to the various managers luckily I still have the dealer principals email from earlier. I think thats pretty underhand and sneaky - I'm tempted to name and shame.

So is the service interval feature actually officially there ? I was told by many sources that it does not exist and was abandoned late in Discovery 3's development as they had issues with RR.

Mine did not appear so booked and had an excellent and very cost effective service at Shukers in Ludlow.

Should I have waited ? Is the indicator standard on ALL levels of trim ? I would like to have an official answer and LRCS are unable to tell... no surprises there.

As for your dealership woes... its a shame your not closer to here as Shukers really do a great job and even let me have a blast in the new RRS recently on spec.

Dom - yes.

The service indicator clearly works in my vehicle too.

Interesting point about the service interval.....I will make a seperate enquiry about the same thing; I was told it was 15k interval.

Well I can assure you all it definitly came on, and I did not have to leave the radio on to see it Wink

My service was considerably more than Simons, I forget now, but I think it was over £350 and the oil was £84 alone.

Oil at Shukers was...

£46.20 and £4.17 for environmental disposal.

Still pricey but less so than most I guess.
