BFG 265/70 R17 A/T tyres - Any Good |
|
Hi All,
I was thinking of buying a set of BFG 265/70 R17 A/T tyres and wheels from Frogs Island. Anyone had experience of this size tyre on a D3. They are bigger than the std 19inch Scorpian Zero's so I'm a little unsure as to whether speedo/milometer/stanav etc will be affected
Thanks Duncan

Tyre Size Calculator should help you work out how far out the speedo will be.
They'll be Performance Wheels rims at a guess so should be fine but check they and the tyres are load rated high enough for the D3. You'll probably find you can get a set of genuine LR 17" rims cheaper off ebay though The End

RichardK here in Perth (W.A.) has these tyres fitted, and I have the same size, but in Mickey Thompson muddies.
Real diameter is around 31.6", about a 5% increase over 255/60/18s. So your speedo will be out accordingly.

Thanks, I looked at the url slimer advised. Good Site, it to was showing about 5% difference at about 60mph
disco4x4au, how does richardK find them on the road. I do quite a bit of motorway driving 80-90+mph, and need something reasonable, accepting they wont be as good as the Scorpian Zeros
Thanks Duncan

Well, Richard would be the person to answer that. I've had BFG ATs on my D1, and they were certainly quiet enough and handled all speed limits here (110kph). But that's not quite the same as the speeds you mention.

I have BFG AT's on my D1 and everybody seems to tell me the same thing - they are not much better than standard tyres in an 'off-road' scenario. Apparently, you need MTs to notice much of a difference.
As for on-road, they certainly make more noise than standard tyres and they don't like wet roundabouts.
In fact, the only good thing about them is they 'look' the part. If I were doing lots of motorway, I certainly wouldn't fit them on the D3.
My first option (if I were inclined to have off-road boots) would be a second set of wheels and proper MT's.

JMC, disco4x4au, Thanks very much. I have Grizzly Claw M/Ts on my defender and they are awesome, but was looking for something a little more "friendly" for the D3.
The A/Ts or M/Ts were only to be used on the D3 for offroading, but I need to get to where I am going and often towing an 8m caravan.
Do you think MTs will do the job of what could be a 200-400 mile towing round trip. Anyone tried this.
Im not sure the stereo will go loud enough to drown out the rumble of M/Ts
Cheers

I have BFG a/t's on my other vehicle, and have had no problems on the Rubicon or at Moab with them. The highway ride is great, and don't have any problems around round-abouts - wet or dry... 2005 Zambezi V8 SE

Duncan,
As I said, I have MTs on mine (first Coopers, then Mickey Thompsons). They are my only tyre ie I use them for day-to-day driving as well as off-road. I've done about 24 000 km now with muddies and have had no problems. They wear a little faster than ATs, but they are of much stronger construction, which is needed for the off-road conditions here. These particular MTs are siped, and behave very well in the wet. They're noisier than the original tyres, but not unbearably so, only really becomming noticable above 80 ~ 90 kph. Even then, a modest volume increase on the stereo drowns them out
They have got noisier as they wear, but still not anywhere near the noise level of my D1 TDI.
Cheers,
