Thought I'd better get the caravan ready for the off.
What a day 
1st fill the water system. Me thinks that's taking a time to fill, yep you got it, I forgot to close the hot water drain tap, 90 litres of H2o over the ground
I then find the shower head had split, off for a new one, £34.99 
2nd sort the fluids on the lavvy. Good dose of pinky stinky stuff in the top tank followed by 10 litres of H2o 
Ok, where the  is this lot going as it only hold 5 litres, yep, pipe come loose in Doo Doo housing, 10.5 litres of pinky stuff all in the bottom of the housing now leaking into the van
3rd Frigging icebox door had closed on it's own, mushrooms now harvested.
B s, I'm off down the boozer  Member of the carrot crank club
Embarrassingly in for the 2nd round, bought another two
D3 Jack Russell carrier
D4 Landmark for towing duties

Oh, the joys of caravaning, I've got it to come, last year I found the hot water boiler had frozen during winter despite being drained It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

M3dpo re the boiler freezing, (now I know I'm about to teach granny how to suck eggs) but it's a well known fact that the boilers retain a fair few litres of water, so one way to help reduce this is to find the boiler hot water outlet and angle that so it is lower than the boiler(tip the caravan that way ) then open up the hot tap, also what cn help further is to remove he shower head open the shower hot tap and blow down the pipe after irst closing any other hot taps and blocking the water inlet ( fold main feed pipe over on its self .

I've found that if you open the boiler/hot tank drain tap before leaving site, and open a tap, the movement on the journey home seems to help in dumping all the water.

If it's any consolation, when we went out earlier this year I set the caravan up and then went out for a couple of hours. When I got back to the site, the washroom floor and at the side of the bed was wet through. Checking around, I found that the drain pipe from the Thetford flush unit had come off (it's just a push fit seemingly) and the contents had flooded the floor. Thank goodness for removable carpets.
I'd done the Thetford drain modification at the back end of last year, and we'd used the 'van a couple of times since. It was the original drain that had come off, so goodness knows what had caused it. I put a bit of super glue on when I put it back.
Freezing water wasn't the issue in my case, as I leave the heating on low (5-10 degrees C) throughout the winter.
Oh, and the reason that I left the caravan in the first place was to visit a local Independent after the D3 had gone into limp mode at 50 mph whilst overtaking and going up hill!
Fortunately the carpets and caravan dried out, and the car's problem didn't return. However, it was an expensive weekend because I made my mind up that the D3 had "bonged" once too often so had to go.

To aid winter drain down of water system there is an item called Keepfloeingwhich is supposed to pressure empty the system. Not got one or tried it but seen a demo - might help.
