TDV6 Alternator light remains on with new alternator! |
|
Hi guys, this is one for Flack and co i fear.
Alternator light stayed on the other day when I started the car.
No charging, as I checked the battery voltage.
Took the alternator off and had a look inside.
Usual evidence of f*uked diodes so I prevaricated and went for a replacement alternator from Island 4x4. That arrived today out here in France and I have just put it on.
Flack has furnished me with a replacement diode pack so I have a 'hot' spare.
I fitted the new alternator and the alternator light is still on!
What the??!
I checked things out with Faultmate and read the faults, which said low generator voltage, I then started the car and looked at the Intrument cluster and low and behold the light had gone off!
Does it take a second start of the engine to clear any fault and tell the light to go off?
By the way the Label on the Denso box says DAN 987 and the Bearmach sticker next to it says YLE500400X for future information.
So any thoughts why the Alternator light stayed on when first stated, and reved by the way and then on the second start goes off as normal?
Car is a 2005 TDV6 HSE with 154,000 miles on the clock, it still had the original alternator on it, which is why I went for a new replacement rather than rely on new diodes. The bearings are old as are the brushes so a new one made sense, though I now have a hot spare!
Regards
Ian

Well at the point you started, the battery may not have charged up enough. Switch off and the car is reset with your now charging alternator. Bodsys Brake Bible

Yes bud sometimes it takes 2 cycles of the ignition to reset it all and for the alternator to start charging, this is why you can't test the alternator off the car when you replace the diode pack as the alternator is controlled by the main ecu and this tells it what charge to pump out.
So all sounds normal to me...
You got the package then bud...

I had this when I changed the Alternator in my D3.
When I first restarted the car after changing it I was really gutted to see the light still shining brightly, even after giving it a few revs etc.
I turned off, then back on again, and it's been fine ever since.
Nasher. Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

That was my experience exactly! As Flack says two cycles of the ignition are often necessary, I'm now learning this using Faultmate to flash modules! Several module upgrades need two cycles of the ignition to get things back to normal.
Thanks Flack, the diodes arrived in Brighton this morning and will be travelling out in comfort in my mates D3! I'm looking forward to remaking the old alternator and having a 'hot' spare. I'll just have to wait until I cover another 154,000 miles before I need it!
