Surely the faster the alternator is turning the higher the output?? Bear in mind my sig line.

No its all controlled by the ecu, if your battery is really low then a quick drive does not charge it up, you would need a drive of a few hours to fully charge it.

Thanks - thought I was being stupid
Thing is - if I have time off work and only do short journeys, then the battery's flat in about a week. Not during Summer, but now it's cold and all the auto stuff is turning on each time you start... the battery can't take it. I took it back to the dealer who's checked everything (over 2 days!) and says the battery is all okay.
Am I being fobbed off while it's still under LR warranty or is the standard battery just not up to the job?
IMHO you mileage is simply too low, and this is probably not a warranty issue.
I think you should be putting it on an intelligent charger like a CTEK, overnight (preferably longer if possible) at least once a week.

Plug in a voltmeter and you will find that maximum charge is only slightly above idle, (about 1000 RPM)flat after that.

These D4's really consume their power quickly! I was sitting in mine on the drive the other day, trying to work out the rear seat entertainment (OK I was watching telly in the back), with the remote FBH fired up, and after about 10 minutes got a warning on the screen that the battery was low and I needed to start the engine.
What I don't know is if this message is triggered by actual battery volts, or if its a theoretical timer that some bod has worked out how long it will last, and then built in an ultra safe safety margin? The engine started easily and showed no sign of slow cranking.
I have found that holding the engine at 1500 rpm defrosts the screen quicker, so yes more charge at just above idle.

crews control - how old is your d4 and what sort of battery has it got?
Mine is a 2010 and shipped with a Varta standard 900ah battery. They are not really up to the job once 3 years old and I know loads of stories of people who couldn't start, but LR have said the battery is fine once charged. I replaced mine last month without wainting for trouble to start.Very rare to get one replaced under warranty. The replacement battery, which is fitted to new d4's is a 850Ah AGM (different technology, used for stop-start vehicles) and this seems to have a lot better ability to hold charge. LR will charge you £250 but you can get one online for £150.d4 HSE

A week of short journeys in a D4 should not drain a fully charged battery. You may have a problem somewhere.
Of note, the charging strategy on a D4 is completely different to that of a D3 so really not wise to compare the two. Indeed, if you followed my alternator and battery testing method for a D3 (posted elsewhere) on a D4 you would be unjustly condemning the D4 alternator. In my view the D4 charging circuit needs to be evaluated whilst driving.

Thank you everyone, Mine's a March 2011 build, so it'll be 3 years old next March. Unfortunately, I can't really leave it on a charger every week as it's left in an underground concrete garage without easy access to power. I'll do some more research and certainly look at the battery that's fitted to new D4's. Cheers stick.
