I have a Disco3 (65K miles on the clock ) which has developed a 'humming' noise at high speed when i take the foot off the gas. My local dealer has just informed me it is a diff problem and needs replacing at a cost of £1,235 (- £893 parts and £342 labour )!!!
I am a total non mechanic but feel as though i am being ripped off. Can anyone tell me if this price for a new diff is correct or even competitive, or where I could find for less and use to renegotaite the price with my dealer? Also labour cost must represent 3-4 hours of work which seems a lot for such a job - yes?
any help or guidance greatfully received.
cheers
Chris

The labour sounds about right from what others have said, not sure on the price of the diff though. Is there any local independent 4x4 garages who could source a cheaper diff and do the work?
Common fault now I think, gonna have to turn my radio off and have a listen to mine I think 2014 D4 XS

Got mine replaced a year ago....£1k...but that was warranty work.. ...front diff looks a bit expensive,I think £600-650 is ballpark.....labour ...?.. (3-4 hours looks about right)....if you can,try and find a good local Independant (I'm sure an honourable member for Cheshire will supply a name/s of decent local)then your labour costs will be vastly reduced "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Not sure where is Cheshire you are, but I have used Bell 4x4 in Queensferry, just outside Chester for the last year and they seem very fair on costs - might be worth giving them a call:

Hi Mate
Had to have my front diff replaced yesterday!!! have a look at this thread!!
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic73907.html
if you are only in Chester I think it would work out alot cheaper to drive to Scotland for the weekend and have the work done!!
See if they will fit a recon unit as it is alot cheaper as you can see by my break down!!!
Enjoy PM me if you need any further info, part no ect are on my receipt.
take care

ps i was in chester yesterday takes 4 hours to dive 245 miles !!! Stevie J

Thanks guys - great help and will now save me a fortune!! I have found a local independent and stopped the work at the dealer - fortunately they had to order the parts. My time of being mugged by the dealer are over thanks to you and the web site. Cheers Chris

I had mine replaced just before Christmas, still makes the same noise. maybe worse. I need to take it back but haven't had the time. Dealer is blaming the tyres. My question is why did you change the diff then?

Would the front diff make a noise like the wheel bearings were humming and a loud screeching noise first thing in the day when you set off, seems to be coming from the drivers side front....
