A week after buying my first Discovery (it was 200 tdi, brand new and a K reg - is that about 1992 ?) I attended a Club Offroad weekend in The Forest of Ae. The Disco had everyone quite stunned by how it followed all the hardened offroad Defenders and LR90's everywhere (it was wearing BFG All Terrain rubbers). The best bit was then heading home down the A74 at 85mph in great comfort and warmth.
Since then I have been a keen offroader, now competing in offroad challenge events in a tricked up Defender with winches, rollcages and huge tyres.
This weekend I took the Disco 3 TDV6 auto on a punishing "green lane" circuit around Alston. I am delighted to report that this vehicle romped the whole route in great style. No rut was too deep, no ledge was too sharp, no slope was too steep and no water was too high. The passengers with me were left stunned by the vehicles competence and comfort in the most exacting conditions and then how it wafted everyone home again.
Now with 6,000 miles on the clock the engine is getting better and better. What Car Car of the Year award has summed it up brilliantly, Exec Saloon during the working week, family wagon on family days, and hardened mud plugger in times of need ! I love this car ..... Disco 4 TDV6HSE

Here here, I can vouch for you praise for the D3's off-road ability. I too took mine off road last week, on the standard tyres, and although it seems I didn't attempt anything as ardous as what you did, it coped effortlessly on very muddied up tracks and waterlogged routes that are close to me. Prior to trading in my last D2 I previously took it on the same route and alhough it coped and got through everything, I just didn't have the poise of the D3.
What's more impressive is nothing fell off, although I was in deep slurry/mud, however in previous D2's regularly the lower fog lamps, and their surrounds migrated south into the mud, having to be rescued afterwards!!!!
Obviously with better tyres and a winch, I'm sure the D3 would fair even better. The electronic gizmos perform wonders, although I personally would prefer that the diff locks stay engaged rather than being turned on/off according to the vehicles whim.

Have only been through our fields so far, but seems way ahead of TD5 Disco - but like Big Al, I do wonder about having no control of the diffs - I have the extra rear locking diff & I must say I expected it to be driver controlled! - probably too much to suggest that LR upgrade the touch-screen to allow us to touch the Diff symbol o the 4x4 screen to manually lock it??!

I too tried using the touch screen to see whether it was possible to engage the diffs on/off. It would have been a nice touch to be able to alter the settings from the touch screen, however if you haven't the touch screen then others would be able to control the functionality.
I did notice that the front wheels are duplicated on the infomration LCD under the speedo, as well as in the 4x4 information screen.
I did notice a few things that weren't apparent/expected:
1. After selecting the terrain response mode, mud and ruts, you can disengage hill-descent which was a welcome relieft as the moment you take your foot off the accelerator HDC kicks in whatever the slope!!
2. HIll descent can be activated whilst in high range, something not expected and I hope only active when below 30 mph or so?

Can't find the front wheel info in the LCD - what does it show, and when? Who is going to test the max speed that Hill Descent activates at then???? - btw, I find it useful in high range for coming down our drive which is steep & it makes a simple way of tackling it in snow/ice!!

I know in Mud & Ruts the wheel direction is displayed in the Message Centre... you may need to be in Low Range though before it appears.

Wheel direction shows on all programmes, not just mud and ruts - even tarmac!

Thanks - got it to appear but needs low ratio. Bit of duplication really as it is on the 4x4 screen anyway!
