Wait till you get it and have a play, it tells you on the dash as you turn the dials what each mode is for

The terrain response has 5 options. It work all the time and i believe is linked to ABS traction control and stability control.
General - which is day to day driving. Some call this the off mode but it is still ON
Grass gravel snow - as it suggests this program limits power to the engine and other things. Stops wheel spin on soft grass etc. but i suppose if you boot it then it'll still spin.
Mud ruts - for deep mud. This setting works with the hill descent also incase of sliding down a hill either forwards or backwards. I think this mode also activates the locking diffs.
Sand - Never been anywhere sandy so can't comment.
Rock crawl - Works with low range transfer box and locking diffs. I'd imagine for crawling over rocks (probably large ones not pebbles). Never used it yet either.

Hill descent control HDC. In use feels like ABS thudding on the brakes. It is used going down hill AND up them. Going down hills you take both feet away from the pedels and the car uses engine braking and also activates the 4 wheels brakes seperately to control the descent. If the car slips it will correct the braking. Touching the brake pedel overrides the system and results in possible slipping and a crash.
The way it works up hill is if you are travelling up a hill and loose traction or engine power. HDC will control the rear descent.
Not many people know the HDC can be adjusted once you are going down hill and the HDC is buzzing away with the braking if you push the + button on the cruise control the HDC speed will increase. It will still activate the braking but at a higher speed like 10mph instead of 5mph. Again the - button will slow it down.

I'm sure a more experience member will be along to verify this. Probably correct it.
Ive only green laned and only used grass and mud ruts.

The snow setting apparently works a treat in winter.

Sand mode can also be used to make a sharp getaway at traffic lights Wink

Terrain response changes loads of things, a bit complicated for one short post.

The various terrain settings will vary throttle response (e.g. grass/gravel/snow will retard throttle, meaning that even if you put your foot to the floor the engine will only accelerate gently), vary the response of the locking diffs and vary the anti-lock brake response. GGS will also start you in 2nd gear from a standing start.

Other things are also changed, like the number of wash/wipe cycles between headlamps being washed if in mud & ruts. Not a lot of people know that Wink

Try doing a search for more information.

It is all a bit like a good camera. Set it to "A" and let it make the decisions to get a better result than trying to set things yourself!

Hi marc22 - congratulations on your D3 acquisition.

TR is an excellent (but very complex) system as pointed out by others. I tow a 2.5t offroad caravan and rarely have to use TR (except low range and Mud & Ruts when positioning the van in some tight spots). However I do use Sport Mode to change down when approaching a hill so that the engine speed and gearbox are ready for the hill. Of course if the load is too high it changes down automatically.

HDC is a great feature as described in the responses already but it takes a while to get used to 'feet off driving' when descending a slippery, muddy slope.

Below is a link to a document I found a few years ago. Unfortunately I don't recall the original source but it describes TR and HDC in a little detail. Experience will be the best way to find out how it all works.

Hope it helps.

* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)
