Does anyone know the (rough) dimensions of a 19" wheel with tire on, and weight ?

feckin heavy - you can get 4 in the back of a D3/D4 behind the middle row seats
my personal record is 13 - thats 8 inside plus the 4 on the road and one slung underneath

You ca get 10 in the car, you just have to pack them properly, also this way they don't roll around:

I think I'll risk it. If I was going to get that paranoid about driving I would get behind the wheel as there are thousands killed in bog standard crashes. Besides how many cars carry spares internally behind a flimsy cardboard cover?
