Tyre Choice?

Looking through the various threads, it looks like the 20" stormers are pretty handy and bolt straight onto a D3. Most sellers on ebay are selling them with Hankook tyres. Having never come across Hankook before, are they worth using or should we be using something else?

Thanks Barry.
Have seen piccies of your wheels in the stormer thread. Very nice Smile
Did they fit straight on without any mods?
Also, did you have to get the geometry changed?
What made you choose General?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Chap's

Jc100 : No problem at all with the fitment , they are a straight fit you use the
same nuts that you have with your OEM rims and you can also use the same centers.

I didn't touch the geo setup (asked the same question as you did in this forum)
everything seemed fine , and the view was that if its not broke why fix it.
I will be keeping my eye on this thought .

I went the for Uhp's because I had generals before on another motor and liked them .
The Uhp is a performance road tyre (at a good price) , so if you will be going off road you would be better with a AT tyre. All my driving is on the black stuff . the best thing about the uhps is that road noise is so so small (less than the 17" that came off it)

Hankook don't make a bad tyre, but a lot of the tyres and rim deal that you find
feature a very basic (cheep) Hankook tyre , if you are going Hankook go up in the range a bit for a more quality tyre.

The size you want is 275/45/20 . dont go any wider than 275 .

Hope they work out for you and let us know how you get on .

Cheers

Hi BarryG
Why do you say 'Don't go above the 275 width'
Thanks

'cause you stand a chance of fouling the suspension upright if the tyre width is a bit wider. I'm running RRS 19" alloys with "standard, for the D3 anyway" 255/55 x19's, and because these are 9" wide rims, there's only about 12mm clearence on the back of the rim to the upright. (the D3 19" alloys are 8" wide) Its not a problem as the upright moves up and down with the wheel. I've done 12k miles on them now without a problem. The Stormer wheels I thought were 9.5" wide, but being a bit bigger, with the suspension upright tapering back slightly must still be close.

hope this makes sense.

thank you Very Happy

by the way Barry, didnt it bother you (I guess not) that most 20" tyres only seem to be load rated at 106 or 107, and not 111 as used on the D3. It was one of the reasons I stuck with the 19's, as I had issues in the past with a warrenty claim when using "non-standard" bits. I know the RRS alloys are non standard, but as I'm using the same size tyre that a D3 HSE uses, the dealer hasnt really got any issue.

Hi Al

your correct , 111 on a 20 are hard enough to get , mine are 110V's
close enough , and my tyre buddy was happy to let me use them

Good question though.

My Disco is going back to the dealer in the morning for its 20K service.
should be fun , cant wait to see what is said after my mods
(the exhaust , the Turbochip and the rims)

Cheers
Barry

Hi Al
Thanks for the info re my queery on 275 tyres...still digesting; will reply later.
Looked in your Gallery and saw the Spotlights. They're not Disco 3s are they...too slim and not black horizontal grill. But mainly, they're not bolted through the bumper, but through the front grill??? Was looking to fit aftermarket Spots. LR wanted around £500 complete to supply and fit...daylight [or spotlight] robbery!! Was looking at these Wipac 4x4 100watt spots [though don't like the logo on the grill...will grind off]. The short of this is how did you fit them, any problems encountered on your set up? Any tips most welcomed.
Thanks RonP
ps. Def will get back to you re my 295 profiles on 20" Stormers.

Ron

you're right, my lamps are the older LR Safari 5000's, as used on Disco 2 and Defender (so genuine LR but not D3). I too wasnt impressed with either the price of a LR fitting kit, or the way it fitted via the bumper, but was aware of the need to be able to remove the grill to replace things like headlamp bulbs.

I was fairly sure the bottom rail of the grill, even being plastic, would take the fixing, as it was only a single 12mm hole for each lamp, and after looking behind the grill, I just added an extra peice of plastic (glued in place) about 75mm long behind where the hole was to be drilled, and went through that as well, so that there was a bit more strength where the lamp mounted. I also added a stabilising strap at the top of each lamp (a small flexy plastic strap) just to take a bit of the shake out, although there wasnt much without it. I then connected the wiring via a plug and socket (from maplin), so the the grill comes out complete with lamps, just by detaching the grill clips, and disconnecting one plug.

Hope that makes sense.

Al
