Radio turns off
I have the 6 cd system it has started to turn off . First I was parked turned the volume down then it powered off and today went off just after I started the engine. It will not turn back on it has totally lost power no light or clock. I drive for about 1 minute and it comes back on and drove for an hour with no problems.
Any ideas or is it junk?

Hi
Personally would first ensure ur battery is in decent condition , testing it with the engine off and then with it running , if u haven’t got a suitable tester maybe pop down to ur local Halfords
Know that if the battery gets low it can start turning items off
Hope that gives u a basic starting point

That had crossed my mind. Both times it had just done a hours drive. It does have a slightly over spec battery that is two years old and the last did 7 years and the voltage on my USB socket that I used to replace the standard socket in the centre of the dash said 13.8 a little low.
If low voltage shuts the radio off is it so total no back-light no clock?
Of course I'm on holiday so hoping it holds together.

Update on problem.
The battery and alternator check out OK but the radio still shuts off saying low power after 5 minutes ish.
Is this a radio fault or something deeper in the system.
Where is that bit of program located?

if it shuts down with the engine not running then thats what its supposed to do its a battery saving thing you also get a dtc logged if you switch the car off and dont remove the key so the radio stays that throws a radio failed to shut down code
how old is the battery if its 3-4 yrs old then change it it may test ok but it will be past its bestplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

Battery is a year old and had it and charging checked.
I've been to drive in cinema and plugged the transmitter into the aux socket and it's been happy to sit for a couple of hours with the key in the auxiliary position. I've put a charger on and it still says low voltage and completely shuts off even the clock so it's absolutely off until you start the engine then it turns back on after about a minute or two.

It's over spec and two different people have checked it. I've left the lights on fir some time and it starts no problem and even if it was battery wouldn't having a charger on it just running the radio stop it getting low.
I know the D3 is a very odd beast and if you wear the wrong hat it will put a warning light on.
As I said its been to two different land rover specialists and both say battery and charging is OK and came to the conclusion it might be the radio. Of course other than genuine replacement it's not an easy thing to change.

Another update.
Alternator light eventually came on and it was just showing 12.2v.
Then went out and charged 14.7 went out and dropped to 12.2v
They replaced the Alternator and back to 14.7v cured the radio going off when parked.
100 milels later parked the radio went off. Started the engine and charging 13.7v
Today still charging 13.7 with lights and heated screen on it only manages 12.7v
Still starts and runs fine.
Any ideas? Battery still comes out good.on a tester at the garage. If it was a Battery fault I can't see it surviving for a year and a half.

the last dead battery problem on my d3 was d3 running fine no probs doing every thing as expected volt wise wife went to shops drove home parked on drive no problems went to start car after 5 mins unloading car all dash lights showing as normal but turning key to start car every thing dead
put a meter on it with ign on showing 12.8v turn key showing 0v after scratching my head a lot swapped batt for a known good one prob solved i then put a drop tester on the old batt and it would show 0v if any load was applied but still showed 12.8 unloaded concluded it was a broken connection between the cells this was an exide batt and had been fine for 3yrs then just died and as a side note the known good replacement i put back on was the one i removed and replaced with the exide just as part of my maintenance schedule that i had kept in the workshop as a spare, think i used if for several months to be sure all was ok before replacing it with a yuasa so dont rule the batt out try swapping it with a known good one if you canplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

Even with a fully charged battery and engine not running the radio will only last a few minutes before it goes off. Disco’s eat batteries, tv is even worse, early D3’s usually just flatten the battery without warning It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
Mine did the same and also lost Bluetooth connectivity changed the battery no further issues
Hope you solve the problemRange Rover Velar HSE First Edition

Been at the garage 2 weeks and they can't find the problem sitting outside in thick ice starts fine and puts out a charge but won't keep up. Now looking for someone else who know more about it. They are a specialist garage but seem to think this is normal behaviour for the charging system. To not keep up with demand.
