Hi All,
What do they call that new gear knob in the D4, is it range command?
Not due to get mine for 3-4 months and this will be my first auto Discovery. Really looking forward to the auto box but a bit sorry that the stick shift has gone in place of the 'rising knob'.
Have many of you on here got a version with the range command yet? Would be interested to hear your feedback on general usability of the knob and how it compares with the stick shift. Have not driven one with the knob so would welcome any comments good or bad.

I've had my MY12 since early September, and on the whole I like the near gear selector and flappy paddles. The only negative that I don't like is moving between sport and drive. It's a quick flick back and forth with the D3 gear stick but turning the rotary dial is slower and more fiddly. On the plus side, now I've got used to the flappy paddles I love them and wouldn't be without them. If you want to make some quick progress on twisty cross country roads then they are astonishing. The more powerful engine and 8 speed box mean you're never short on power. I've only done a couple of green lanes but the flappy paddles aren't so bad for locking into gear when off the tarmac either.

I think that LR could have invested a bit more money in the paddles. They feel cheap and look cheap. I'd have thought a leather covered version to match the steering wheel would have been the way to go. Good aftermarket add on?
Is it the same on the Jag with this sytem?

Just picked up my new D4 on friday the rotary selector is quite natural to use after a short while mind you I did come from a Jag XF as well so I am quite well accustomed to it anyway, but I actually find it more awkward to change back to a standard auto lever now

Hadn't though much about the paddles, but now you mention it they should be fantastic when pulling loaded trailers uphill on twisty roads as won't have to do a racing style gear change to keep her alight !! 11 RR 4.4 TDV8

I got used to the "self erecting gear knob" very quickly and now prefer it.
The paddles are a fantastic addition especially for hustling and overtaking on A & B roads as you can be instantly down two cogs for instant high torque take off or safe quick overtaking. Not even the tiny delay of the kick down. In SPORT mode, apart from the safety change up/down if you exceed rev limits, it STAYS in the gear you select forever. In D it will revert to automatic Drive after about ten seconds. I still can't believe the overtaking speed in the 50-70mph band it's faster than my 3 litre X3 was and twice as heavy!! I think the eight cog ratios and the extra torque are perfectly matched. If it don't fit the third time - try a bigger hammer

Mine has been good. Have the paddles in a tt 3.2 as well so like the way they work. Hardest thing is overcoming what is natural. It takes a while to acknowledge you have put the car in park with handbrake on cos your natural actions to move a lever and pull a handbrake are now twist a button which disappears with a tiny pull of a button to put handbrake on. I tow with mine regular and it is a major improvement on the tdv6 engine. Smooth, quiet and will quickly fly up to 100 when you need to crack on down the m1.

Not had an automatic before so the rotary selector is what it is - no problem in use and it automatically returns to Park when you switch off the engine. I do miss a gear stick though, it's somewhere to rest your hand, but there is more room to fiddle about in the cup holders.
Haven't used the flappy paddles much yet, other than accidentally when trying to turn on the heated steering wheel. I would like to know what gear I'm in when in Drive but it only shows this when in Command Shift (flappy paddles). MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

Just ordered a MY12 XS without driving it (already have a MY10 D4) do the paddles work in drive or only in command shift in 'sport mode'? 2018 D5 3.0 HSE Lux
