Exhaust smoke from under front arch?

Hi all... my trusty Indi can't look at my D3 until after Christmas.

Although not concerned (or should I be?!! Sad ) but I popped into my local Kwik Fit to check-out exhaust smoke that can sometimes be seen (mainly on morning start-up) coming from under the front nearside arch occasionally. I've also noticed in the mornings when warming it up for a minute or two and I'm outside, the smell of exhaust even around the front is quite noticeable.

Kwik Fit scratched their heads.

Would any of you guys say i should be concerned?, rush it to another garage?... thought maybe exhaust manifold gasket or something?

(I can't spot anything under the bonnet)

I take it this only happens on cold mornings?

If so I suggest it's your FUel Burning Heater venting as it should

All perfectly normal chap.

Cheers

It's just your fuel burning heater working, nothing to worry about.

Cheers chaps.

By the way, I did do a search, but nothing conclusive until I got your pointers. Very Happy

I just don't understand the FBH, but I'll chill out and put up with being gassed every morning. Class Thumbs Up

Jim1000...plenty of guys on here would trade a body part for that smoke and smell.... Thumbs Up ...Seems to be a common failure, judging by numerous posts so just enjoy the fact that it works (below 6c anyway)

Wink

I know... I'll add it to the list of quirks that make me feel I'm driving the 'real thing'...

An auto gearbox that has more moods than my missus. (Smooth and gentle one minute, jolty and grumpy another day!)
Electrics and bits of trim that fall about or fail when they like.
An engine that sounds like a Boing 747 on start-up (love that), sometimes a bag of nails (after Sainsbury's diesel) and sometimes, well like I'd expect, again, depending on what mood it's in!
Rattles that come and go.
Farts and regular AS adjustments that bemuse passers by!
A key fob that LR won't repair, can't be refreshed but packs up and leaves me stranded 700 miles from home!

I love it and still with these things, plus many more, I would struggle to give it up Thumbs Up

One thing I would say is, that with my first D3 winter, It's a bit of a bore having to get the thing to warm up (in the cabin)!... it takes half an hour plus to get the heaters to produce anything decent!.... hooray for the heated seats.... oh know, they packed up this week, I forgot!.... hooray though for the heated windscreen... ah, but it only heats half of the screen due to some fault/stone chip!!!

I too was disappointed in the length of time to get any meaningful warmth, even with the FBH running properly, until last week when I put on all the manual switches down the left instead.....Windscreen,dash vents, footwell etc-temperature to max and fan on 2......miles better.....Forget the blower control in either auto or manual, the other way works far better Thumbs Up

Loads of info on all the above: Disco3.co.uk -> Wiki -> Fuel Burning Heater (FBH) -> (last paragraph: Smoke From Front of Vehicle)

Interesting Kwik Fit had no clue: the D3 has been around for some 7 years now, surely they would have seen one or two in their shop? Confused Not to mention it's not the only car with an auxiliary heater... Anyway, enjoy the fact it's there and working (for now Rolling with laughter )

I contemplated both these options but for the moment think in my case it would be a waste of money. I don't think it would defrost the screen or warm the cabin because unless i actually drive the vehicle the air temp from the vents is very poor Crying or Very sad even after 30 mins on tick over with FBH roaring away, do i have a circulation problem Question (air lock) thoughts anyone please.

Ridgy.

Sounds strange after 30 mins! Confused
I know when my FBH had locked out the car never got warm just on idle....

I have one of these fitted in the passenger footwell for really cold winter mornings:
DEFA 1350W HEATER:

Connects to the mains and I have it on a timer
