Hello peeps, took my 06 D3 (120,000 FSH miles) into local indy to sort EPB out, I asked them to check and renew any worn bushes/ball joints that may be causing a “light clunk/knock†on the near side usually when the N/S wheel/ wheels go over a mild pot hole (they said all bushes were fine) . When I say mild I mean it doesn’t have to be a huge crater, a sunken bit of macadam usually causes the knock. The indy test drove her on some pretty rough ground but couldn’t hear a “clunk/knock†probably because he was being bounced all over the place, I can’t hear it on rough terrain but on the back streets with dips and grids it’s there, speed bumps don’t cause it either and I can’t really tell if the clunk is from the front or rear , it’s driving me insane so any help and personal experiences on the subject will be greatly appreciated .

turn the steering wheel left and right, if it knocks both sides then its the steering rack tie rods, happened to me a few months ago, did as you had all the bushes checked, then forum member 10forcash came round this week to do a service and hey presto, did the above.
During the time, even going over a very light kerb I'd hear a knock and more obvious when the steering was off line and in reverse

I specifically asked for the ARB bushes to be checked as that was my first thought, but alas no I had set aside £600 to replace all bushes if required ( am I dreaming)?, I can’t seem to give away my dosh, and I get the impression they can’t be arsed. Maybe the stealers will take my coin .

Welcome to the mind obsessing pain of my D3 ownership!... indies and LR dealers saying nothing wrong with it and quoting lines like "you should drive a RRS, then you'll know what rough ride is like...".
The freaky thing I've noticed (apologies if this starts an entirely different topic!) is that the suspension seems to adjust, not in the manual way... meaning, if I carry a boot load of gear and then unload, straight away it feels like a bag of nails on normal road. I pull-over, raise the suspension, then lower it right down and then back to normal and it seems better again. Still knocks over bumps, but much better.
Does this mean the D3 has the ability to soften it's own ride? Like resetting the auto gearbox, can the suspension be reset?! Nov 04 D3 TDV6 HSE Java Black

Ian (10forcash) came today and replaced all the bits the indy should of found and replaced, knows why the indy didn't find the worn bushes, all Ian had was a jack, axle stands and a long bar, the indy had a ramp and all the gear.
Anyway it's sorted now and the enjoyment of owning a D3 has returned , i just wan't to drive her and SWMBO thinks I'm sg around because i offered to go to the shops 3 times this evening . Ian your a star , thank you very much .

Jim……two words, magic carpet , the knocky clunky noise which actually caused arguments between swmbo and myself has gone (I kept telling her to shut up so I could try and identify where the noise was coming from). Tbh it made driving the D3 a chore and I even stopped washing her, I like things right and the knocks took the enjoyment out of the ride, after all it’s supposed to be a prestige motor and now she is restored, anal I know but that’s the way I am……. Wasn’t expensive either, well not if you take to someone who knows what they are doing in the first place , because of the the work Ian carried out he recommended 4 wheel alignment which is next on my list, why have you had a few alignment's .

Mine doesn't have knocking, is generally good over soft ups and downs on main roads and motorways but on the side streets and smaller roads I'm tense driving it to the point where I prefer driving my wife's Micra!
It bangs bad over the slightest bump, dip or small hole to the point where it kicks me in the backside and makes the interior shake.
As for wheel alignment. That's a long story as I've had some good ones and one recently so called expert eff it up. It's been pulling slightly ever since. Even though someone else's equipment says its ok.
Rule with alignment is never go near high street tyre places unless reccomended by LR places. Even if a garage says they Re expert, make sure they have the Hunter equipment and put it into tight tolerance mode.
May I ask, did your mechanic need any specialist LR kit to deal with the suspension. Could my friendly non-specialist do the bushes do you think Nov 04 D3 TDV6 HSE Java Black

The little things make all of the difference, i've just had the rear toe link bushes done after 3 years of unidentified knocking.......bliss. £200 or so by a main stealer but the peace was worth it.
i would have though any competent mechanic should be able to take care of most bush replacements.

I trusted my local independent Land Rover specialist and it cost me money that I need not of spent , I have no faith in my indy anymore. I’m not sure what part of the country you reside in but Ian travels across the UK and is well worth talking to (no specialized gear needed and yes a decent mechanic could replace your bushes), but by the sounds of it (kicks you in the backside) you may need to talk to someone who knows about Land Rovers. Thanks for the heads up re alignment, just had new boots so want them to last a few miles .
@ Finnsdad......... I felt yor pain and bliss it most certainly is

Hi Ridgy, i have a similar knocking noise as you described in your post. Happens on small bumps and when jab the brakes. I understand you had the bushes replaced which cured the knock. Could you tell me which bushes in particular were replaced?
