grinding turns : could it be the caliper? |
|
This last beautiful weekend whilst cruising Chapmans Peak Drive in Cape Town - and ogling at about 25 new Porche 991's !!!? cruising around on a publicity stint. Temp. was about 30.5°C and the sea was turquoise... ANYWAY, I was saying..
I turned a bend and heard grinding noise coming from my right front wheel. Sounded like a metal on metal brake grinding. Could this be a caliper scraping somewhere? If so, why?
I have just had new discs put on but the pads were still good so instructed them to leave them in.
It happened another 2 or 3 times whilst turning reasonably shasply at slow speed. It reminded me of my student days - riding the brakes until there was metal on metal, but I know it is not the pads this time.

Jack up the corner and check the wheel bearing for movement. Also, check for stones jammed in the brake.

Bump stop on the suspension may need greasing.
I had this a couple of years back but on both sides.
Turn the wheel on full lock to open up the suspension bits, you will see a round ish ball type of thing sticking out.
Stick a bit of grease on it and try it.
Just a thought.

I think Dave is referring to the steering lock stops, they can cause a grating noise but it would only happen on full lock when the stop physically touches the hub.

That was the first thing I tried with mine, plenty of copper grease...unfortunately the grinding didn't go away and I ended up getting a new front diff.. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Check the back plate isn't bent I know logic says it would make a constant noise if it was, but mine bent and only made a noise when turning... 2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

thanks for the replies. What John is talking about is what it sounds like. Not an inner diff grind. Or a stone as Gareth mentioned. Will check on thurs. When I have some time.
So is it a 'no' tn a damaged caliper?
