Hey Ronk, what sort of mpg do you get when towing a 1500kg van?

In Holland on the Motorway system and keeping to a very gentle 50mph, I was getting an indicated 25mpg - I was amazed to say the least. The fuel was from Total in Germany. Shell was bought just outside Rotterdam prior to the ferry crossing and on our journey up thro' Yorkshire it dropped to 22mpg. The caravan I was towing was my Fendt, the front is quite square so aerodynamics are not in its favour.
The moral of the story I suppose is 'stay on holiday if you want better mpg!'

Thanks for that, Trying to decide whether to buy a D3 or XC90. Our van is very close to yours in weight and towing with our D2 V8 (on gas) we get about 10-11mpg at 55-60mph.
We tossed up between the XC90 and the D3 but decided on the D3 and am very glad we did. We tow a 1900KG Elddis Superstorm and the Disco just makes it so easy, especially with the auto box. MPG can average around 20-22 whilst towing which is not too bad really. Manouvering in reverse is sooo simple in low range. You don't need any throttle, even up hill, you can just control everything using the footbrake - brilliant! Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

I used to tow the same caravan with a 2.8 Lwb Shogun - It was very good, but I have to say the D3 takes the biscuit! It's head and shoulders above my old Shogun. The D3 provides a very capable and stable platform for the job. The Auto box & Cruise control is a first class combination and always seems to be in the correct gear. Go for the D3 if you can.
I supposed you might say I'm somewhat biased being an owner, but after my sojourn across the continent last summer I would't change my opinion for a gold watch and a pension!
