Help! Hissing noise and blue smoke |
|
2006 manual TDV6 60,000 miles. Sorry, have searched and can't find any obvious answers. Symptoms are a hissing sound under full whack (consistent with turbo working) and a blue haze in the rear view mirror. Not a huge heavy pall, but it gets heavier if accelerating uphill. Quite different to the shrieking noise experienced when the turbo pipe went. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Bit more info on this: the diagnostics found an egr valve sticking on idle, but not under revs. Also a turbo failure fault, but that did not reappear when going through the cycle, ie it cleared and did not immediately return. The garage said drive it for a bit and then retest to see if the turbo failure fault returns, then time for a new turbo!! Sounds to me like an EGR problem, except for the hissing noise under acceleration...?

Hi usually the hissing or whistling noise is a split in the intercooler hoses. Or has somebody just had the turbo apart as they could of knocked one of the fins abit.

Would help if you have fault codes, I also had blue smoke before my turbo got replaced, but no noise, varible vains stuck! Have you got power loss?.Have you blanked the egr? Why not? A few mods... and keeping it all running...Faultmate MSV2
MY09EGR's blanked Thanks Bellautos, BAS

It might be worth checking out the exhaust balance pipe that goes from the o/s manufold to the turbo. I've read on the forum that they can split and you then get the hissing sound under load, sounds like it's coming from the bulk head.
Check from under the car and see if there are any sooty marks/stains on the bulkhead above the bell housing..

Exhaust balance pipe has already been changed, and that was a quite different noise. Slight power loss, I think... EGR blanking plates on order But TBH I haven't had the car very long... Do you think it would be worth getting the turbo out and cleaning the rod that operates the variable vanes in the turbo before it seizes and shags the actuator? On the basis that the EGR valves have been shoving crud back into the engine for the last 60,000 miles... __________________

EGR blanking kit fitted last weekend, and have now had a week running it, sadly still hissing and smoking under load also quite gutless all over the rev range...
Fault codes pre-EGR blanking exercise were as follows:
P0299-00 Turbocharger A Underboost Condition
P0405 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low
no idea what all that means... I really thought the EGR blanking would cure it haven't had a chance to re-diagnose yet.
Any ideas? the turbo does that little ticking thing after the engine is turned off to exercise the variable vanes to stop them gumming up, so I really hope it's not that wot is shagged.... __________________

Hi,
P0405 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low- this is simply a code flagged up saying one of the valves is shot!!! now you have blanked the EGR's off you can clear it, but it will keep coming back all the while the valves are blanked, it is not a problem so you can safely eliminate it from your list
Not sure on the Turbo charger boost code but maybe boost valve leaking(reason for hissing?) Sorry guessing on this one

EGR replacement done, problem still there. Replaced Exhaust balance pipe - problem solved
I can't believe i have got my D3 back!! chuffed to bits. interesting that this is the second time the balance pipe has been changed, couldn't get a new one when it last went, so put a 2nd hand one in (emergency repair ) and the failure had totally different symptoms each time...! __________________
